Softball Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series Against Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Montevallo softball team split a doubleheader with Lee on April 7 with a bounce-back 16-8 win in game two after falling 5-4 in game one.

GAME ONE
The Falcons' comeback effort was stopped short in game one with Lee taking a 5-4 victory while Montevallo left 11 runners on base throughout the game.

The Falcons offense wasted no time in getting the first hit of the day with Shelby Sloan singling on the second pitch of the afternoon. Montevallo would load the bases in the next two at-bats but a double play and a pop up left two runners stranded for the Falcons.

A bases-clearing triple from the Lady Flames put Montevallo in an early 3-0 hole after the first.

Montevallo answered with a run of its own in the second. Following an Olivia Bergert walk, Georgia Hughes and Ellie Derrick went back-to-back with singles to load the bases with just one out. Sloan singled on the first pitch of her at-bat to score Montevallo's first run of the game. A pair of outs to end the inning stranded three Falcons on the bases.

Lee would go on to score a fourth run to make the score 4-1 after two. The score would remain unchanged until the Lady Flames took a 5-1 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Lauren Higginbotham singled into center before Lily Stone's first hit of the series moved her into scoring position. In the next at-bat, Sydnee Reaves tripled down the right field line two score both runners and cut the lead down to 5-3.

The Falcons' defense held Lee scoreless in the bottom of the inning before trimming the lead to one with a run in the sixth. With runners on first and second, Higginbotham drove in a run to make the score 5-4.

Montevallo kept Lee off the board in the sixth to head into the Falcons' final at-bat down by one run. An Alisha Lanyon double put the tying run on base before Georgia Hughes' infield single gave Montevallo two runners with two outs. A final fly out ended the Falcons comeback and handed Lee a 5-4 win to open the doubleheader.

Alisha Lanyon went yard for her seventh homer of the year and a grand slam that lifted the Falcons to a 7-2 advantage after the top of the fourth.

Lee added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the Falcon lead down to 8-5.

In the top of the sixth, Montevallo put up another five-run inning that was sparked by a Lee error that put Lanyon on base and advanced a walked Robinson to second. Lauren Higginbotham singled to juice the bases before Stone recorded her second RBI of the game with a single to center. A second Lee error brought home two Falcons to give Montevallo an 11-5 lead.
