Box Score OXFORD, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team is advancing in the 2023 Gulf South Conference Tournament after an 8-2 win over in-state rival Alabama-Huntsville.
The Falcons found life early in its elimination contest against UAH, Friday, pouring six runs on the Chargers in the first inning. The rally began with an RBI single from
Asa Awbrey and
Sam Kuchinski run on a UAH error. With the bases loaded,
Evan Liddie drilled his first homer of the year, a grand slam to right, to break it open 6-0.
In the second, Montevallo added another run on a sacrifice fly from
Reed Latimer to lead 7-0.
Michael Morse earned the start and threw three scoreless innings to open the ballgame before UAH added its lone run in the fourth.
The second UAH error of the game brought across another Montevallo run to give the Falcons an 8-1 advantage.
Morse turned in another pair of scoreless in the fifth and the sixth to halt the three-seeded Chargers.
UAH picked up its second run of the day in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk.
Montevallo was unable to bring across a run in the seventh and eighth but held UAH off the board to take a six-run lead into the ninth.
Connor Phelan closed out the win in the ninth, as Montevallo moves on in the GSC Tournament with the 8-2 victory.

- Montevallo scored eight runs on 11 hits in Saturday's win while UAH added 10 hits but scored just two runs.
- Michael Morse earned his third win on the mound as he pitched six and a third innings with just two runs allowed and four strikeouts.
- Evan Liddie turned in a career day at the plate as he finished 1-for-2 with five RBI and a grand slam.
- Barry Eiseman was hot at the plate as he finished 4-for-5 and now has five hits in the tournament overall.
- Reed Latimer, Asa Awbrey and Luke Mitchell each added an RBI.
