UM Drops Tough Battle with UWF in GSC Tourney, 9-5

The Falcons stay in the hunt for the NCAA Division II Postseason Tournament. The selection show is Sunday May 14, at 9 p.m.

OXFORD, Ala. –  The University of Montevallo baseball team's time in the Gulf South Conference came to and end, Sunday, with a 9-5 loss to No. 1 seeded West Florida.

West Florida took an early 2-0 lead on the Falcons in the second inning on a pair of RBI singles.

Montevallo quickly responded with a three-spot in the third. A single from Khalid Collymore and a walk for Barry Eiseman led off the inning before a single up the middle from Reed Latimer drove in UM's first run. Next, a two-RBI single from Luke Mitchell pushed the Falcons in front 3-2.

After a pair of scoreless innings on the mound for JJ Pease, UM picked up its fourth run on a solo homer from Jake Smallwood in the fifth to lead 4-2. A double for the Argos in the bottom of the frame evened the contest 4-4.

In the sixth, a bases-loaded fielder's choice plated Montevallo's fifth run to put UM ahead 5-4.

Three homers over the course of two innings for West Florida saw the Falcons fall behind 9-5.

UM was unable to crawl out of the four-run deficit, falling 9-5 in an elimination game at the GSC Tournament.
