Falcons Drop Both Games of Doubleheader

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo volleyball team drops both matches on the last day of the UT Tyler Invitational in Tyler, Tx.

In the first match, Montevallo lost to Dallas Baptist University, 0-3.

In the final match of the tournament, the Falcons were defeated by St. Edward's University, 0-3.

Aliyah Thompson led the Falcons for the day with 14 kills while she added 16 digs. Colton Thompson had an impressive day as she compiled 25 assists while she had a double-double in the second match with 13 digs and 12 assists.

GAME NOTES HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • Dallas Baptist started the match on a 10-4 run with points coming off attack errors from the Falcons.
  • After a kill from Kamble Frenette, the Patriots scored 11 straight points to make it 21-5.
  • DBU ended the first set with 12 kills while hitting .688 compared to six kills by Montevallo
Set 2
  • The Falcons started the second set with two kills from Alex Koontz and Morgan Hoffman.
  • After three straight points from DBU, the Falcons responded with three straight points of their own to make it 5-3 in favor of UM.
  • DBU fought back to take the lead at 9-8 and then scored nine straight points to make it 19-8.
  • Montevallo tried to claw back with kills from Alex Koontz and Kamble Frenette but the Patriots put the set away with two aces.
Set 3
  • DBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two early kills.
  • Montevallo took the lead with two kills from Aliyah Thompson to make it 5-4.
  • Both teams were trading points back-and-fourth as both teams had similar hitting percentages (UM .250, DBU .255).
  • The Patriots were able to hold off a late UM comeback with a kill from Koontz and an ace by Brooklyn Hudson but DBU fired a kill to down the Falcons and win the match.

GAME NOTES HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • St. Edward's started off hot with five straight points before Montevallo timeout.
  • UM clawed back into the match to make it 8-11 with kills from Ellise Hanson, Morgan Hoffman, Kamble Frenette, Brooklyn Hudson and Aliyah Thompson.
  • The Hilltoppers and Falcons exchanged points every other serve to make it 11-15, then Montevallo tied the set up at 16-16.
  • STE come out hot off a timeout to make it 17-21 and held on from there to take the set.
Set 2
  • The Falcons jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set highlighted by two service aces from Morgan Hoffman.
  • UM kept the lead at 12-9 then the Hilltoppers tied it up at 12-12 with three straight points.
  • Montevallo took the lead again to make it 15-13 with kills from Koontz and Hoffman but St. Edward's score six straight points to recapture the lead.
  • The Hilltoppers went on another run with five straight points to win the set.
Set 3
  • A highly competitive third set saw both teams tied at 5-5 with two kills from Ellise Hanson and one from Aliyah Thompson.
  • STU reclaimed the lead at 12-8 highlighted by three service aces.
  • The Hilltoppers then created some distance with with six kills to make it 19-11.
  • The Falcons roared back late with kills from Morgan Hoffman, Colton Thompson, Aliyah Thompson and Maggie McColley.
  • After a single point from STU, Montevallo tied the game up at 22 a piece with kills from Koontz and Hanson with a block from Hoffman included.
  • UM took a 23-22 lead with a kill from Koontz but St. Edward's put the match away with three straight points.
UP NEXT
 Montevallo will play in the UAH Invitational next weekend. The Falcons will take on Barry University on Sept. 8 at 2:30 p.m. and will play a double-header on Sept. 9 against Anderson University and Trevecca Nazarene.
