BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With a record-tying performance this week, University of Montevallo men's golf's
Eric Boutwell has been named the Gulf South Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office, Thursday.
The Russellville, Alabama native carded rounds of 70, 68, and 68 in the three-round Jay Jenison Cup event in St. Augustine, Florida. With his second place finish, Boutwell helped lead UM to a sixth-place team-finish out of 14 teams.
Boutwell led the way for Montevallo as he opened at two-under in round one at the Slammer and Squire course at World Golf Village. The junior continued his rhythm in round two as he dropped to six-under for the tournament with a 68. In the second round, he carded six birdies to help climb five spots up the leaderboard to fifth.
On Tuesday, in the final round, Boutwell began on hole 13 trailing the leader by three strokes and eventual tournament winner, Trey Tesiero, by two strokes. With a par to open the round, Boutwell eagled his second hole of the day to drop two shots and sit in a tie for first. With two holes remaining, Boutwell trailed Tesiero by two strokes. A birdie from the junior on his 17
th hole of the round closed the gap to one entering the final hole. Following a Tesiero bogey, Boutwell carded a par to force a playoff on the final hole.
In the playoff, Boutwell fell short but still earned his third consecutive second-place finish.
Boutwell's 10-under three-round score tied a school record set by Tristian Nienhuis at the Matt Dyas Invitational in 2019.
This is the first Golfer of the Week award for Boutwell this season and the second of his career.
Boutwell and the Falcons will return to action on Oct. 9-10 at the Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis at St. Albans Country Club.
