Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Montevallo Tops West Alabama, 1-0, To Continue Unbeaten Start

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer snapped a seven-game winless streak against West Alabama with a 1-0 victory over the Tigers on Friday night.

"It's a big win for us tonight," said Head Coach Jake Wyman. "We've been knocking on that door for a couple years and I feel like we kicked it in."

The Falcons looked to strike early with a trio of dangerous passes inside the first five minutes played into the West Alabama box, but each time was turned away by the defense. Montevallo put its first shot on goal just seven minutes into the contest when junior midfielder Bailey Raphelt fired a shot that was turned aside by the UWA keeper.

UM continued its offensive onslaught in the first half with another Raphelt shot on goal off a quality ball from Tori Ochoa at the 8:26 mark but again the West Alabama defense held its ground.

Montevallo saw another quality scoring opportunity with a free kick just outside of the West Alabama box, but Falcon-leading goal scorer Kaeri Ward's shot sailed just high of the crossbar.

The Falcons had a pair of corner kicks inside the final ten minutes of the half but, despite multiple shots inside the box, could not produce a first half goal.

Montevallo again looked to find an early goal out of the half with three corner kicks inside the first five minutes, but the West Alabama defense didn't budge. UWA nearly broke the ice on a breakaway in the 58th minute, but sophomore keeper Jolie Cazale made a diving save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

An Avery Campbell freekick with 16 minutes left in the half showed another Falcon scoring chance but Miranda Fragoso's shot on the rebound missed the mark.

Freshman duo Morgan Goehring and Isabel Dillehay executed a perfect give-and-go in the 80th minute leading to Dillehay's first career goal and the first lead of the night for either side.

A late cover from Cazale secured the sophomore her first clean sheet of the season and Montevallo's first victory at Varsity Field in 2023.
