Falcons Advance With Second-Half Comeback Against No. 7 Mississippi College

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer advanced to the Gulf South Conference semifinals after a 4-3 comeback win over seventh-seeded Mississippi College in the first round.

The Falcons came out on the attack with shots from Rilee Bradbury and Lainey Farabaugh in the first eight minutes of the game. The Lady Choctaws responded with five-consecutive shots before finally finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Mississippi College extended its lead 20 minutes later after collecting the rebound off an Emily Hounsell save to go up 2-0 with five minutes left in the half.

With the Falcons trailing 2-0 coming out of the break, Hounsell added a second save before Shadia Valenzuela put the Falcons on the board just five minutes into the half. The Lady Choctaws converted a set piece in the 62nd minute to go back out in front by a pair of goals. Just four minutes later, Valenzuela beat the keeper again to bring the Falcons back within one. Over the next five minutes, the Falcons looked to tie the game with a trio of shots on goal, but each was saved by the MC keeper. In the 85th minute, an MC miscue led to an own goal that brought the Falcons back level for the first time since a 0-0 tie in the 23rd minute. Montevallo looked to end the game in regulation on the ensuing kickoff. With the ball played into the corner, Valenzuela picked up the loose ball and played a cross to Lainey Farabaugh who was denied a goal on her first attempt but the second effort with the right foot found the mark and lifted Montevallo to a 4-3 lead with just under four minutes remaining. The Falcons held the ball for the final two minutes to secure the win and punch their ticket to the GSC semifinals in Huntsville, Ala. on Friday, Nov. 15.
