MOBILE, Ala. – The Montevallo men's basketball team earned its first road win of the season, securing a 99-92 win over Spring Hill on Friday night.
Montevallo drew first blood with a
Brandon Fussell layup in the opening minute. After Spring Hill responded with a lay-in of its own,
Jaylen Curry and
Jay Gillispie scored the next two buckets for the Falcons putting UM up 6-2, at the 18:29 mark. A
Derek Moore layup and five consecutive points from
Jaylen Curry would give Montevallo a 15-10 lead at the first media timeout. The Badgers responded out of the timeout with a pair of buckets, tying the game at 15 with 14:58 left on the clock. Spring Hill took its first lead of the game, 19-18, at the 12:02 mark, but the Falcons responded with an 8-1 run, capped by a Fussell three-pointer to go up 26-20 at the 10:18 mark. The Badgers once again built a response, going on a 10-2 run to take a 30-28 advantage with 7:04 left on the clock. Both teams traded baskets throughout the next five minutes, as a
Bryson Andrews three-pointer put UM up 38-37 at the 2:30 mark. Fussell recorded the last six points of the half for Montevallo, but the Badgers ultimately took a 45-44 lead into the break.
Spring Hill opened the second half strong, going on a 6-1 run to extend the SHC lead to 51-45, at the 18:22 mark. Fussell responded with the first field goal of the second half for UM at 18:00. The Falcons began to find a rhythm, as
Camden Andrews cashed in on an and-one opportunity and
Jaylen Curry added a layup and a pair of free throws to put Montevallo back up 56-55 with 14:41 left on the clock. Both teams continued to go back-and-forth in the next few minutes, as the score was dead locked at 64 at the 12:15 mark. Montevallo began to break away with an 8-0 run, highlighted by five points from Andrews to give UM a 72-64 lead with 10:18 left on the clock. Spring Hill trimmed the deficit in half, cutting the UM lead in half, 78-74, at the 7:50 mark. Montevallo found separation once again, this time using an 8-0 run capped by an
Aidan Gardiner layup to give the Falcons its largest lead of the night, 85-74, at the 6:47 mark. The Badgers would not go away, using an 11-3 run to make the contest a one possession game, 88-85, with 2:34 left. After both teams traded a pair of baskets,
Jaylen Curry knocked down a crucial three-pointer as the shot clock ran out to push the lead out to 93-87 with 1:19 left on the clock. A Gillispie jumper and free throws from Fussell and Andrews sealed the deal in the final minute, as Montevallo took home the 99-92 victory.
