MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball moved to 4-1 on the season with a dominant 86-42 win over Carolina Christian on Wednesday night.
The two sides traded buckets for the first four minutes with the Falcons and Centurions tied 6-6 at the first media timeout. The Falcons opened a lead with back-to-back triples from
Brandon Fussell before the sophomore added a pair of fast break points to give Montevallo a 14-8 lead with 11:54 on the clock. Out of the under 12 media,
Carter Wesson scored his first points of the night before
Derek Moore added a bucket in the paint to give Montevallo a 10-point lead with 10:09 to play. The Centurions stayed in the game with a series of free throws ahead of the media timeout. Following the third media timeout,
Luke Smith nailed a triple to give UM a 24-11 lead. CCC cut the Falcons' lead down to just seven with 5:19 left in the half. With a 7-2 run to end the half highlighted by four points from Fussell, Montevallo held a 37-19 lead heading into the locker room.
Moore's first bucket of the second half lifted the Falcons to a 20-point advantage just eight seconds into the second. Ahead of the first media timeout of the second half, a
Tyson Sexton triple and a
Jaylen Curry bucket opened a 27-point Montevallo lead at 48-21 with 16 minutes left to play. With a three-pointer at the 12:31 mark,
Carter Wesson gave the Falcons a 40-point lead at 63-23 with the Falcons holding CCC to just four points in the first eight minutes of the half. CCC ended the scoring drought with a layup at the 12:41 mark. Wesson continued a high-scoring night with a pair of free throws at the 10:08 mark that lifted the Falcons to a 45-point advantage. With the Falcons leading 77-40 with 3:44 left to play, Wesson added a pair of free-throws to reach a career-high 18 points. With the lead all but insurmountable, Montevallo held on for a 44-point win at home over the Centurions.
