Women’s Basketball Hosts UT Southern to Close Non-Conference Slate

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team is set to close the non-conference slate on Tuesday, Nov. 26, hosting UT Southern at Central State Bank Arena.

So Far This Season…
Montevallo holds an overall record of 1-3 this season. The Falcons opened the season in Montgomery, Ala. falling to No. 16 Nova Southeastern and Embry-Riddle in the GSC/SSC Challenge. The Falcons responded with its first win of the season, defeating Shorter 52-51 on the road.

Last time out, the Falcons dropped a road matchup against Spring Hill 78-69. Against the Badgers, Jordan Gillies and Isabel Grimes recorded career-highs of 21 points, while Elisa Saffold added a season-high 12 points.
Montevallo is shooting 58 percent from the floor, including a 26.2 percent clip from long distance. Opponents are shooting 71 percent from the floor, with a 38.2 percent clip from the three-point range. The Falcons are averaging 27.8 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and six steals.

Individually, Grimes leads the Falcons in scoring (12.8 ppg), field goals made (20) and steals (seven). Gillies has been solid as the starting point guard and is currently leading the Falcons in rebounding (5.0 rpg) and blocks (three). Grimes and Gillies share a team leading two assists per game.

UT Southern holds an overall record of 3-2 and a 2-1 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference. The Firehawks captured wins over Oakwood (94-61), Faulkner (66-61), and Loyola New Orleans (74-70), while falling to Stillman (92-70) and Williams Carey (87-75).

UT Southern is shooting 39.2 percent from the field compared to a 40.1 percent clip shot by opponents. The Firehawks are averaging 36.6 rebounds. Individually, Ashley Dickey leads the Firehawks with 18.6 points per game, while Lauren Smith leads the team in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and Silkiari Varquez-Troche has a team-leading 26 assists this season.
