CLINTON, Miss. – The Montevallo women's basketball team closed its two-game Mississippi road trip on Saturday, falling to Mississippi College 58-48 inside of A.E. Wood Coliseum.
Aubrey Sorrells led the way with 17 points, five rebounds, and three blocks, while
Anna Katherine Eastman added ten points, three rebounds, and three assists.
The Choctaws opened the game strong, scoring the first five points of the contest, before a Sorrells free throw at the 8:18 mark put the Falcons on the board.
Elisa Saffold followed that up with a three-pointer, cutting the early MC lead to 5-4 at the 7:15 mark. Both teams scored a pair of buckets, as MC took a 9-8 advantage at the first media timeout. Montevallo struck quickly out of the timeout, scoring on back-to-back layups from Eastman and Sorrells to put the Falcons up 12-9 at the 4:20 mark. The Choctaws scored the next five points to regain the lead, 14-12, with 3:01 left on the clock. Sorrells cashed in on a jumper in the final two minutes, as the score sat 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams opened the second quarter with baskets, as
Ramie Reid cashed in on a jumper for Montevallo at 8:22. The Choctaws began to take control, going on a 9-0 run through the next four minutes, before a Gillies jumper cut the deficit to, 25-18, at the 4:20 mark. MC continued to push, scoring the next seven points to take a, 32-18, lead with 1:35 left on the clock. The Falcons responded with a Sorrells lay-in and a Saffold three-pointer in the final minute, as MC took a, 32-23, lead at the break.
The Choctaws scored the first four points of the half, before an Eastman field goal put Montevallo on the board in the second half, as UM trailed, 37-25, at the 8:33 mark. Saffold cashed in on a layup in the next few minutes, but the Choctaws continued to extend its lead, jumping out to a, 43-27, advantage with 5:45 left on the clock. Montevallo responded, outscoring MC 6-1 in the next four minutes to cut the Choctaw advantage to, 44-33, at the 1:19 mark. MC closed the quarter with back-to-back layups to take a, 48-33, lead at the end of the third quarter.
After a pair of MC free throws opened the fourth quarter, the Falcons connected on back-to-back jumpers from Eastman and Sorrells, as MC held a 50-37 lead at the 6:59 mark. The Choctaws added a lay-in, before a Sorrells free throw and lay-in cut the lead to 52-40 with 4:35 left on the clock. MC responded, knocking down a pair of three-pointers which extended the Choctaw lead to 58-40 with three minutes to go in the contest. The Falcons continued to fight, scoring the last eight points of the game highlighted by a pair of layups from
Lia Edwards, but the Choctaws held on to preserve the 58-48 victory.
