Falcons Win Double Overtime Thriller Over Lady Bucs

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned a thrilling double overtime victory over Christian Brothers, 82-79, inside of Central State Bank Arena on Thursday evening.

Jordan Gillies led the way for Montevallo and recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore also dished out five assists and knocked down ten crucial free throws. Three other Falcons reached double figures including, Lia Edwards (17), Aubrey Sorrells (11), and Savannah Cook (10).

Montevallo's first points came at 8:56, as Gillies found Sorrells who cashed in on a lay-in. Elisa Saffold followed that up with a three-pointer a minute later, as the Falcons led 5-1 at the 7:40 mark. The Lady Bucs began to find its rhythm, using a 7-0 run to take an, 8-5, advantage at the 5:35 mark. Sorrells began to find a rhythm of her own, scoring on a pair of layups in the next few minutes, as UM trailed 11-9 with 3:56 left on the clock. Both teams traded a pair of baskets, before a lay-in from Edwards tied the game, 15-15, at the end of the first quarter.

Jerrilyn Richardson opened the scoring in the second quarter, cashing in on a layup under a minute in. CBU scored the next six points, taking a, 21-17, advantage at the 6:45 mark. Gillies scored the next UM field goal, but the Lady Bucs responded with a three-pointer to pull ahead, 24-19, at the 5:28 mark. Edwards cashed in on a pair of free throws and Anna Katherine Eastman drained a triple minutes later, but the Lady Bucs stayed in front, 28-24, with 3:15 left on the clock. CBU continued to push, using a 6-0 run to jump ahead by double digits, 34-24, at the 2:16 mark. Sorrells and Gillies cashed in on lay-ins in the final two minutes, as the Falcons trailed 35-28 at the break.

The Lady Bucs opened the second half strong, scoring the first seven points to jump ahead, 42-28, at the 8:13 mark. Montevallo responded with a 7-0 run capped by a Richardson lay-in to cut the deficit to 42-35 at the 5:50 mark. After a CBU jumper, the Falcons continued to push with a 7-0 run, highlighted by six consecutive points from Cook to cut the CBU lead to, 44-43, with 2:04 left on the clock. The Lady Bucs responded, closing the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a, 50-43, lead into the fourth quarter.

The Falcons opened the fourth quarter strong, as an Eastman three-pointer followed by baskets from Edwards and Isabel Grimes put the Falcons ahead, 51-50, at the 8:28 mark. The Lady Bucs scored its first bucket of the fourth at 8:00, but Edwards responded with a triple to put UM up, 54-52, at the 7:09 mark. After CBU regained the lead, a Reid hook shot put the Falcons back in front, 56-55, with 4:02 left on the clock. The Lady Bucs jumped back in front, 59-57, at the 2:27 mark, before five straight points from Gillies gave UM a 62-59 lead with 1:40 left on the clock. Both teams traded a pair of free throws, as UM held a 64-61 lead with 21 seconds left. The Lady Bucs drained a triple to tie the game at 64 with 19 seconds left. Both teams failed to convert in the final seconds sending the game into overtime.

CBU opened overtime with a free throw, before Gillies scored the first basket for the Falcons at the 4:27 mark. The Lady Bucks connected on three consecutive free throws to take a 68-66 with 3:02 left. Both teams failed to connect on the offensive end through the next three minutes. The Lady Bucs looked to seal the deal after securing a defensive rebound with 24 seconds left, but Edwards came away with a crucial steal and drew a foul. The sophomore made one of two at the line, making it a one-point game. CBU knocked in one free throw on the other end, as the Falcons trailed 69-67 with nine seconds left. After a missed UM three-pointer, Gillies secured the offensive board and cashed in on a lay-in at the last second to send the game to double overtime.

Both teams opened the second overtime with a pair of buckets, with all four Falcon points coming from Cook. Richardson hit a three-pointer to put UM up by three at the 3:20 mark and Gillies knocked down two free throws a minute later to put UM up, 78-73, with 2:05 left. CBU responded a minute later with a triple to cut the deficit to, 78-76, with 1:09 left on the clock. Richardson knocked down a pair of free throws on the other end for UM, but another CBU triple made it a one-point game, 80-79, with 21 seconds left. Gillies knocked down a pair of free throws and the Falcon defense held strong in the final seconds to preserve the 82-79 victory.
