Falcons Drop Close Contest to No. 17 Union

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team dropped a close contest at home, falling to No. 17 Union 71-65 on Saturday afternoon.

Isabel Grimes led the way with 15 points, while Lia Edwards added 13 and Aubrey Sorrells scored 11. Jordan Gillies was solid on the boards, grabbing a team season high, 13 rebounds.

Aubrey Sorrells struck first, cashing in on a jumper to open the scoring. After a Union basket, Sorrells got back to work in the paint, with a lay-in to put the Falcons up 4-2 at the 8:01 mark. The Lady Bulldogs began to get in a rhythm, going on an 11-0 run through the next five minutes to take a, 13-4, advantage at the 2:46 mark. Isabel Grimes responded for the Falcons with the next four points to cut the deficit to, 13-8, with 1:39 left on the clock. Both teams traded triples, with Savannah Cook connecting from long range for the Falcons. The Bulldogs knocked in a pair of free throws in the final seconds, to take an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Union opened the scoring in the second quarter with a lay-in, but Edwards responded on the other end with a triple, as Union led 20-14 at the 9:16 mark. Cook cashed in on a lay-in a minute later, but the Bulldogs would extend its lead to double digits, 26-16, at the 7:37 mark. The Falcons cut into the Union lead, as three pointers from Eastman and Richardson in the next few minutes made the score, 28-22, with 4:29 left on the clock. The Falcons continued to push, as Richardson and Gillies cashed in on baskets to make it a one possession game, 30-27, at the 1:24 mark. Grimes followed that up with a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game, but a Union triple in the final minute gave the Bulldogs a, 33-29, advantage at the break.

Grimes secured the first points of the second half, draining a three-pointer at 8:49. The Bulldogs responded with back-to-back baskets to take a, 38-32, lead at the 8:05 mark. Sorrells connected on a free throw and Grimes cashed in on a lay-in, as Union held a, 38-35, advantage at the 7:00 mark. Both teams traded points through the next few minutes, as Union held the three-point lead, 44-41, at the 4:26 mark. The Falcons scored the next five points to gain its first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter, taking a, 46-44, lead with 1:23 left on the clock. The Bulldogs hit back-to-back triples in the final seconds to take a, 50-46, lead at the end of the third quarter.

Montevallo scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to tie the game, 50-50, at the 8:41 mark. The Bulldogs scored from long range, but a pair of free throws from Edwards, followed by a Gillies three-pointer put the Falcons back ahead, 55-53, with 6:42 left on the clock. The Bulldogs outscored the Falcons 7-2 through the next few minutes, to take a, 60-57, advantage at the 4:24 mark. Cook hit a hook shot, but five straight Union points would give the Bulldogs a, 65-59, lead with 2:54 left on the clock. The Falcons fought back, scoring the next six points highlighted by an Edwards and-one to tie the game, 65-65, with 1:25 left on the clock. The Bulldogs broke away at the end, scoring the final six points to take the 71-65 victory.
