MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball returned to action on Saturday, falling to Auburn Montgomery 88-69 on the road.
Aubrey Sorrells continues to her solid freshman campaign, as she led the way with a career-high 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting.
Jordan Gillies was perfect from the floor, adding ten points.
After an AUM bucket opened the game, the Falcons fired off the next seven points, highlighted by back-to-back baskets from Gillies, to put Montevallo up early, 7-2, at the 7:54 mark. The Warhawks responded with an 11-0 run through the next five minutes to pull ahead, 13-7, with 2:25 left.
Savannah Cook halted the AUM run, cashing in on an and-one.
Isabel Grimes added a lay-in a minute later, as AUM took an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sorrells opened the second quarter with a lay-in, but the Warhawks scored the next six points to go up, 24-14, at the 8:10 mark. Both teams traded baskets through the next three minutes, as the Warhawks held a, 30-20, advantage at the 5:14 mark. The Warhawks outscored the Falcons 9-4 through the final five minutes of the half, to take a, 39-24, lead at the break. Sorrells scored the final two baskets for the Falcons to bring her first half point total to 12.
Anna Katherine Eastman opened the scoring in the second half with a layup in the opening minute. After the Warhawks stretched the lead out to 15, 43-28, at the 8:36 mark, Sorrells scored the next six points to cut the deficit to single digits, 43-34. The Falcons continued to fight, as a Gillies triple and a lay-in by Edwards in the next minute, trimmed the AUM lead to, 46-39, at the 6:03 mark. AUM stretched the lead back out, outscoring Montevallo 15-5 in the next few minutes, to take a, 54-41, lead with 3:13 left. Five points from Cook cut the deficit down to, 56-46, at the 2:21 mark.
Jerrilyn Richardson hit a three-pointer and Edwards connected on a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to seven, but the Warhawks scored the final five points to take a 63-51 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Elisa Saffold opened the scoring for the Falcons with a triple in the fourth, as AUM held a 68-54 lead at the 7:18 mark. Sorrells cashed in on a turnaround jumper and Edwards connected on a pair of free throws in the next minute, but the Warhawks continued to stay ahead by double-digits, 72-58, at the 6:22 mark. An
Isabel Grimes lay-in cut the lead to, 74-62, but a 7-1 run by AUM would seemingly put the game away, as the Warhawks jumped out to an 81-63 advantage with 2:48 left. Both teams traded points in the final minutes, as AUM took home the 88-69 victory.
