MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball opened the Gulf South Conference slate with a 75-60 win over Lee on Thursday night.
The Falcons jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first six minutes with
Jaylen Curry on a hot start with four early points. Lee finally got on the board at the 13:57 mark but the Falcons stretched the lead out to 15-2 with a
Brandon Fussell triple at the 11:16 mark. Lee closed the gap with a quick 6-0 run but a
Derek Moore finish at the rim ended the Flames' run. Ahead of the under-eight media timeout, Fussell added his third bucket of the night to give the Falcons a 24-10 lead with just six minutes left in the first half. Over the next four minutes, Fussell caught fire from long-range with a trio of triples to extend Montevallo's advantage to 33-12 with 4:05 on the clock. Lee would cut into the Falcons' lead with an 8-1 run in the final four minutes but the Falcons' hot shooting start gave Montevallo a 34-20 lead heading into the break.
Lee cut the lead down to single digits for the first time since the 8:25 mark in the first half with an 8-2 run in the first 90 seconds of the second. Fussell snapped the run with back-to-back buckets to move to 19 points on the night with nearly 18 minutes left in the half. The Flames pulled back to within nine points of the Falcons before Fussell ended another run with 14:52 to play. A
Camden Andrews three at the 13:35 lifted the Falcons to a 46-32 lead before the two sides traded buckets ahead of the under-eight media timeout. With 4:40 left to play, Lee clawed back to within striking distance with a 5-0 run the trimmed Montevallo's lead to 56-52. Fussell eclipsed the 30-point mark with a three at the 3:28 mark to put the Falcons back up by eight before the final media timeout of the game. With 1:30 left in the game,
Jaylen Curry nailed a three to put the Falcons out of reach at 67-55. The Falcons went a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to improve to 5-2 on the season after earning a 75-60 win over Lee to open conference play.

- Montevallo won the rebound battle 32-28 with the Falcons pulling down seven offensive rebounds.
- The Falcons also won the turnover battle 11-14 with 24 Montevallo points coming off Flame turnovers.
- Brandon Fussell added his second 30-point game with 33 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 5-of-7 from long range.
- Camden Andrews and Jaylen Curry led the game with seven rebounds apiece while Andrews scored 10 points and Curry tallied nine.
