LAKELAND, Fla. – Montevallo men's lacrosse knocked off No. 7 Florida Southern, 19-18, in overtime for the first time in the Falcons' first ranked win in program history.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals from
Matthew Boas in the first two minutes of the game with
Trevayne Hunter assisting both goals. Following a Florida Southern goal, Hunter gave the Falcons a 3-1 advantage before
Alex Egorshin picked up his first save of the day off the following faceoff. The Falcons forced a turnover from the Mocs that lead to a break-away goal for
Jacob Obee at the 9:22 before
Jackson Klewchuk added a fifth Falcon goal just 20 seconds later. Boas picked up a loose ball in front of the crease and beat the FSC goalie for his third goal before adding a fourth goal in the next Falcon possession. With 4:43 in the first,
Morgan Trites' first goal of the season lifted Montevallo to an 8-1 lead before FSC ended the Falcons' 6-0 scoring run with 4:11 on the clock.
Caden Chalut's first goal of the season came on a give-and-go with Boas. FSC added a pair of goals before Egorshin ended the quarter with his fourth save to head to the second with a 9-4 Falcon lead.
Florida Southern opened the second quarter with an early goal before a mishandled shot attempt led to a Montevallo run-out that saw Boas find the back of the net once again. Off the following Falcon faceoff win, Boas went low to beat the keeper for the sixth time in the first half. Off a second clock violation for FSC,
Zach Laberge found the back of the net from way outside to put the Falcons up 12-5 with 5:34 to play. FSC cut the Falcons lead down to six with 3:32 to go before Egorshin denied the Mocs again just before the break.
The two defenses locked down for the first five minutes of the second half before Florida Southern broke with ice at the 9:32 mark. Klewchuk notched back-to-back goals to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead with his fourth goal of the season. The Mocs added a pair of goals in quick succession before the Falcons shut down three dangerous Florida Southern scoring chances. With 1:22 to go in the third,
John Irving ended a quick run from FSC with his first goal of the season to send the game to the fourth with a 15-9 Montevallo lead.
The Mocs struck first in the fourth quarter before Boas added his seventh goal of the afternoon to give Montevallo a 16-10 lead with 11:19 to play. Egorshin turned away another dangerous chance from FSC before Hunter extended Montevallo's lead to seven with 7:31 to play. The Mocs scored four goals in a matter of 2:06 to trim Montevallo's advantage to 17-14 with 4:11 to play. With 2:26 to go,
Luke Hennebaul looked to end the Mocs comeback with a goal on an unattended net to give Montevallo a four-goal lead. The Mocs cut the lead down to one with 1:01 on the clock before scoring a man-down goal with six seconds left to send the game into overtime.
With the Falcons taking possession to start the extra period,
Jackson Klewchuk scored his second overtime winner of his career with 3:14 on the clock to give Montevallo its first ranked win in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST | The Falcons exploded for nine first quarter goals on 17 shots to take a 9-4 lead into the second. Egorshin notched six saves in the opening quarter while Boas scored four goals.
2nd | Montevallo's offense slowed in the second with just three goals to FSC's two. The Falcons finished the second quarter with a perfect 7-for-7 clear mark while Boas added another two goals to finish the first half with six of Montevallo's 12 goals.
3RD | The third quarter was even on the board with both sides scoring three goals apiece. Egorshin added five more saves to his line while the Falcons took a 14-13 ground ball advantage in the third.
4TH | Florida Southern mirrored montevallo's opening quarter with nine goals while scoring seven goals in the final six minutes to send the game to overtime.
OT | Klewchuk ended the game with his second overtime game-winner for his fourth goal of the day and Montevallo's first win over Florida Southern.
