Montevallo Takes on West Alabama in Midweek Clash Wednesday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo baseball returns to action this week riding a four-game winning streak, first with a trip to West Alabama, Wednesday, Feb. 14.
 
The Falcons and Tigers will square off in Livingston, Alabama at 4 p.m., Wednesday in a non-conference midweek matchup.
 
Junior right-hander Seth Gurr will take the mound for UM in his first start of the year against the Tigers.

So Far This Season…

The Falcons opened the year in Florida but bounced back last week and enter this week on a four game win streak.
 
The streak began on Tuesday, Feb. 6, when the Falcons completed a nine-run comeback to beat Spring Hill 14-12 in extra innings. Later in the week, UM swept UVA Wise in its home-opening series. Logan Samuels and Adiel Melendez each earned their first wins of the year on the mound in a double-header to begin the series. Gino Cozzi closed out the sweep with his first win and threw 5.2 scoreless and hitless innings with six strikeouts.

 
Scouting West Alabama: 


West Alabama enters the midweek matchup at 5-2 overall on the year and is coming off a 2-1 series win over Kentucky State.
 
The Tigers began the season with a four-game series at home to Missouri St. Louis, winning that series 3-1.
 
The matchup against Montevallo is the first midweek contest for the Tigers this season.  
 
Series History Against West Alabama:

Montevallo holds a narrow lead in the series since 2010, 17-15. Last season, the Falcons won the series 2-1. UWA is 9-5 at home versus the Falcons.
 
Player Highlights Montevallo:
 
Sophomore Christian Kallaher has emerged as one of Montevallo's top offensive threats this year and is batting .417 with three homers and eight RBI six games into the season.

Graduate Evan Liddie turned in a career week for UM during the four wins and is batting .385 with a team-leading and Gulf South Conference leading 11 runs scored.
 
On the mound, Logan Samuels leads the way with a 2.61 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 13 strikeouts and a 1-0 record on the year.
 
 Seth Gurr will take the mound against the Tigers in his first start and third appearance of the year. He had four K's through five innings pitched this season.

 
Player Highlights West Alabama:
 
Bryce Newman leads West Alabama with a .381 batting average while Houston Kitterman has knocked in a team-high eight runs.
 
On the mound, Graham Holland boasts a 2.57 ERA while Bryant Quimby and Maxwell Schumacher each have a team-high 10 RBI.
