MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Montevallo softball team takes the first game of their three-game series against Spring Hill College. The Falcons defeated the Badgers, 6-4, on Thursday, Feb. 15.
After a scoreless first inning, Montevallo took the lead with their first home run of the season off the bat of
Sydnee Reaves.
Kendall Channell was walked prior to the Reaves two-run shot to put the Falcons up 2-0. In the bottom of the second, Spring Hill loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. UM starting pitcher,
Taylor Lloyd, got the next batter to pop up to
Molly Pendley for the second out of the inning then Lloyd got out of the bases loaded jam with a failed bunt attempt from the Badgers.
Taylor Lloyd had another great outing in the circle as her final line was four innings pitched, two strikeouts, one earned run and she scattered five hits. Lloyd would give way to junior
Mya Young in the bottom of the fifth.
Montevallo threatened to score in the fifth as they had bases loaded with one out. Spring Hill would end the threat unscathed as
Bentlee Stiner lined out to the pitcher followed by an atom ball off the bat of
Kendall Channell that landed in the shortstop's glove.
The Badgers were able to capture the lead as they jumped on the new Falcon pitcher. With second and third, no out, SHC would ground out to the shortstop to score the runner from third and advance the runner from second. The following batter would reach with an infield single to take the lead. Both teams would go 1-2-3 in the sixth.
With one out in the seventh,
Olivia Bergert would single to center.
Ansley Hudson would reach a batter later by a Badger error. With
Ariana Pinder batting, Bergert would swipe third and then score off a sacrifice fly from Pinder to tie the game.
Mya Young would escape a bases loaded jam in the bottom half to send the game to extras.
In the extra frame, Montevallo would start the inning with
Bentlee Stiner on second.
Kendall Channell would walk then freshman
Madison Fargo would bunt Stiner and Channell over.
Sydnee Reaves would give the Falcons the lead with triple to center, scoring Stiner and Channell.
Molly Pendley would step into the box next and drive home Reaves.
Spring Hill would not go away quietly as they had first and third with no out. Head Coach Beth Wade would go back to bullpen and bring in
Rachel Whiddon.
Kendall Channell would throw out the runner from first trying to steal second to get the first out of the inning. The next batter would ground out to score the runner from third to make it 6-4. Rachel would strike the final batter out looking to capture her Gulf South Conference leading third save of the season.
