Falcons Sweep No. 22/23 Northwood with 8-3 Win, Sunday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The University of Montevallo baseball team completed a sweep against No. 22/23 Northwood, Sunday, with an 8-3 win.
 
 
With the series finale win over Northwood, the Falcons have extended their winning streak to eight games and are now 6-0 at home.  
 
The weekend sweep marks the first time Montevallo has swept a ranked team since sweeping No. 21 Columbus State in 2017.
 
The scoring began early on when Zen Hiatt launched a homer over the scoreboard in right field to give UM a 1-0 lead. In the third, Montevallo added a run on a fielder's-choice RBI by Connor Crowson to lead 2-0.
 
Montevallo's offense applied pressure in the fourth and plated two more runs. First, Daniel Irizarry scored on a balk before a double to right center for Mitchell Walker plated Ethan Huddleston to make it 4-0.
 
 
After the fifth scoreless frame of the day for Gino Cozzi on the mound, Connor Crowson extended UM's lead to 5-0 with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the frame.
 
Northwood scraped across a run in the sixth and plated two more in the seventh to trim UM's lead to two, 5-3.
 
Reliever Connor Phelan entered the game in the eighth with a runner on and went three up and three down, to preserve the lead.
 
Walker recorded his second RBI of the day in the bottom of the eighth to add an insurance run for the Falcons. To cap off the scoring, sophomore outfield Wyatt Cunningham added his first career homer, a two-run shot to right, to push the lead to 8-3.
 
Phelan returned for the ninth and struck out two batters to end it, recording his second save of the season and the 14th of his career.
 
Cozzi earned the win of the mound, his second of the year, and pitched 6.0 innings pitched with six K's, two hits and only one run allowed.

  • Mitchell Walker led UM at the plate as he finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
  • Wyatt Cunningham, Connor Crowson and Zen Hiatt each hit homers in the when and recorded an RBI. Cunningham and Crowson each finished with one hit and two RBI.
  • Cunningham homered for the first time in his career.
  • Gino Cozzi improved to 2-1 on the year as he threw 6.0 innings, gave up just one run, two hits and struck out six.
  • Luke Mitchell and Ethan Huddleston joined Walker as the only Falcons to record multiple hits, each finishing 2-for-4.
  • Connor Phelan earned his second save of the season with 2.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts, and no runs, walks, or hits allowed. He has 14 saves in his career and is now second all-time in Montevallo's Division II program history in saves.
