Falcons Ranked No. 6 in NCBWA South Region Poll, Host Georgia Southwestern Tuesday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, in a quick turnaround, against Georgia Southwestern at 3 p.m. in Montevallo, Alabama.
Montevallo hosts the 2023 Peach Belt Conference Champion Hurricanes in the third midweek matchup of the year and the first at home in Bob Riesener Stadium at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
In addition, the Falcons were ranked No. 6 in the NCBWA South Region Poll released on Tuesday, moving up from No. 9. Lee (5) and West Florida (2) are the only two GSC programs ranked above UM in the poll.

So Far This Season…

The Falcons snapped an eight-game winning streak last week in game one against Christian Brothers in the Gulf South Conference opening series, with a 17-4 loss. Montevallo responded with a sweep in a doubleheader against the Bucs, 16-4, and 9-2, to take the series win and begin a new win streak.
 
Montevallo enters the midweek 10-4 on the year and has an 8-1 mark at home.
 
As the season continues, the Falcons remain top-5 in the GSC offensively, defensively, and on the mound. The UM pitching staff has the third-best opponent batting average in the league at .260, and 126 strikeouts.
 
At the plate, the Falcons have the third-most homers in the GSC, 17, and a batting average of .320.


Montevallo also remains one of the best defensive teams in the league with a .973 fielding percentage and a league-low 13 errors.
 
Scouting Georgia Southwestern 

Georgia Southwestern opened the year receiving votes in the NCBWA Top-25 national poll but fell out after dropping two games to Florida Southern and a midweek contest to AUM, 14-13.
 
Since the AUM loss, the Hurricanes have been on a tear, sweeping Colorado Christian, taking down West Georgia 17-2, and sweeping No. 4 Indianapolis most recently, 5-1, 15-13, and 16-0.
 
Georgia Southeastern leads the Peach Belt Conference with a .322 batting average offensively and has a league-high 159 strikeouts on the mound.


Player Highlights Montevallo:
 
Seth Gurr makes the start for the Falcons in the midweek clash with a 1-0 record on the year. In his last start, Gurr struck two and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a win over West Alabama.
 
Zen Hiatt begins the week as UM's batting leader with a .400 batting average, .769 slugging percentage, three homers and 13 RBI. He went 5-for-10 last week with two homers and eight runs driven in.
 
Connor Crowson and Ethan Huddleston each have a team-high 15 RBI. Huddleston, who hit two homers in the CBU series leads UM in home runs, alongside Christian Kallaher, with four.

 
Player Highlights Georgia Southwestern:
 
Cory Lee leads the Hurricanes with a .407 batting average this season while Kalvin Alexander has registered a team-high eight homers and 24 RBI.
