Falcons Fall To UIndy In Season Opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In the season opener, Montevallo fell to No. 9 UIndy, 13-6, on a rainy Saturday afternoon in central Alabama. 
 
Montevallo looked to strike first with freshman midfeidler Anthony Coviello firing the first Falcon shot of the day with 14:22 on the clock but was turned aside by the keeper. The Greyhounds drew first blood at the 12:52 mark before adding a second goal just five seconds later. With 10:34 on the clock, Alex Egorshin notched his first of 19 saves on the day for the fourth-most in a single game in the sophomore's career. UIndy added a third and final first quarter goal off a Falcon turnover to head to the second with a 3-0 lead. 
 
The Greyhounds score four unanswered in the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding 7-0 lead with 9:39 on the clock. Sophmore attacker Matthew Boas' shot on goal was turned aside with 8:36 to play in the half. The Falcons defense dug its heels in for the rest of the half while Jackson Klewchuk broke the ice for Montevallo with 4:46 to go before Zach Laberge scored after a Gerry York faceoff win in the next possession. Neither side found the goal in the final four minutes and went into the half with Montevallo trailing 7-2.
 
The second half began with an early Greyhound goal before James Godfrey answered with a goal of his with Laberge recording the assist at the 13:17 mark. Montevallo's Jacob Obee fired a shot that was saved by the Greyhounds before UIndy added a goal with 6:05 to go. UIndy found the net to send the game to the fourth quarter with an 11-3 advantage. 
 
Boas opened the fourth quarter with his first goal of the season in the opening 32 seconds. The Greyhounds added a pair of unanswered goals before Gerry York found his way into the scoring column with 5:02 on the clock to make the score 13-5. A few minutes later, Obee scored his first of the season with 2:03 to play. Montevallo would eventually fall, 13-6, to start the season 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST | Montevallo was outshot 13-2 in the first 15 minutes. UIndy went 8-for-8 on clear attempts while Montevallo posted a perfect 5-for-5 mark with a 9-7 UIndy advantage in ground balls. 
2ND | The Falcons broke the ice in the second quarter with a pair of goals but allowed four UIndy goals on 13 shots while Montevallo record nine turnovers. 
3RD | Montevallo added just one goal in the third quarter while giving up four goals with a 16-4 UIndy advantage in shots. 
4TH | The fourth quarter saw the Falcons outscore UIndy 3-2 on a total of eight shots in the quarter. 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Overall, UIndy outshot the Falcons 53-20 on Montevallo's opening day. 
  • Egorshin record 19 saves in his 60 minutes in the net.
  • Six different Falcons found a goal during the outing with Jacob Obee and Zach Laberge leading the team with two points each on one goal and one assist. 
 
UP NEXT: Montevallo heads to the Sunshine State for a meeting with No. 15 Florida Southern at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.
