MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo baseball resumes the 2024 season, Friday, with the first home series of the year at Kermit A. Johnson Field and Bob Riesener Stadium.

Preseason ranked No. 24, Montevallo will host UVA Wise in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader Friday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m., and concluding on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
 
A pair of veterans along with a Preseason Newcomer Watchlist honoree will take the mound for UM this weekend. Senior right-hander Logan Samuels will get the start in game one, junior transfer Adiel Melendez takes the mound for game two and senior Gino Cozzi will start game three on Saturday.

So Far This Season…

Montevallo earned its first win of the season last time out against Spring Hill, 14-12, in come-from-behind fashion. UM overcame an 11-2 deficit at the end of the third to force extra innings and win, 14-12. Montevallo scored eight runs combined in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
 
To begin the year, UM faced a gauntlet in Florida with a lone-game against Embry-Riddle, who is rated No. 17 by masseyratings.com, and a double-header against No. 2/15 Rollins. UM fell 6-3 to ERAU and 4-3, 12-3 to Rollins.
 
Scouting UVA Wise:


UVA Wise is 3-2 to start the season which is the team best five-game start since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016. The Cavaliers split a four-game series to open the year against Shepherd University and defeated King University most recently, 16-8. Much like UM's performance against Spring Hill, UVA-Wise used an eight-run seventh inning to move past the Tornadoes.

Player Highlights Montevallo:

Pitchers Adiel Melendez and Logan Samules both turned in promising outings despite allowing some runs. Melendez struck out eight against Rollins in four innings pitched while Samules totaled six K's through five and one third innings.
 
At the plate, senior Evan Liddie leads the Falcons four games into the season and following a massive performance against Spring Hill. Liddie currently has a team-high six hits and is batting a third-best .353. Against the Badgers he went 5-for-5 from the plate, set a school-record with six runs scored, and tied a school-record with seven times on base.
 
Newcomer Connor Crowson has a team-high four runs-batted-in after he collected four in the win over Spring Hill. The native of Okotoks, Canada, is batting .313 from the plate.
 
Christian Kallaher remains the lone Falcon with a homer on the year after belting one against Rollins.
Transfer Dawson Hargrove earned his first save of the year against Spring Hill earlier this week and Chirs Foster recorded his first win.
 
 
 
Player Highlights UVA Wise:
 
Justin Reed is batting .353 to lead the Cavilers this season. He has eight RBI and two homers. Against King, he was 1-for-5 but collected three RBI with a bases-clearing triple in the eight-run seventh.
 
On the mound, Bro Trantham leads UVA Wise in strikeouts with four in just three innings pitched.
