Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped game one of the series against Delta State, on Friday, in Cleveland, Mississippi.
The Falcons jumped ahead of Delta State early on to lead 2-0, but the hot bats of the Statesman pushed ahead of UM 8-2 for the series-opening loss.
Montevallo opened the scoring in the second inning, beginning with a leadoff double from freshman
Daniel Irizarry. With one out, Liddie knocked a double and drove in Irizarry to put the Falcons on the board 1-0. With two outs,
Connor Crowson singled, scoring Liddie, to extend the lead to 2-0.
Adiel Melendez pitched four scoreless and hitless innings on the mound before giving up the lone hit in the fifth on a solo homer to the Statesman. Melendez added his fifth strike out of the day to get out of the fifth with a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, DSU scored four runs on the Falcons on two hits to jump ahead 5-2. The Montevallo pitching staff gave up four Statesmen in the sixth inning.
The Statesman bats stayed hot in the seventh with three more runs to push ahead 8-2.
Montevallo recorded just one hit after the third inning and was unable to trim the deficit, dropping game one of the series.
