Huddleston Ties School Record in Walks, Gurr Strikes Out Seven, Falcons Top Miles 5-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a midweek contest in Birmingham, Alabama the Montevallo baseball team topped Miles College, 5-1, for the fourth straight win.
 
After leaving five runners on in the first two innings, the Falcons were able to scrape across a run in the third. Ethan Huddleston, who reached on a walk, scored the first run of the game for UM on an error after Brandon Moore reached on a fielder's choice.
 
In the third, Montevallo registered four walks and scored the second run of the game. Jake O'Connell earned an RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk to score Evan Kirk, pushing the lead to 2-0.
 
Falcon starter Seth Gurr turned in back-to-back three up, three down frames in the fourth and fifth innings to hold the 2-0 lead.
 
To lead off the sixth, Huddleston drew his fourth walk of the game which tied the single-game school record. Logan Harbin reached on a hit-by-pitch, and a double steal placed both Harbin and Huddleston into scoring position. O'Connell added his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Huddleston, to put UM ahead 3-0. In a pinch-hit at-bat, Landon Leake doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases and scoring two runs, bolstering the lead to 5-0.
 
Miles added its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh, to make it 5-1.
 
Gurr's start came to a close in the seventh with 6.1 innings pitched, one walk, one run allowed and a season-high seven strikeouts for his second win of the year.

  • Seth Gurr earned his second win on the mound with seven K's, one walk, one run and only five hits through six and two-thirds innings pitched.
  • Ethan Huddleston tied the school record with four base-on-balls as he also tallied a hit and scored two runs.
  • Jake O'Connell and Landon Leake each had a game-high two RBI in the win.
  • Connor Phelan faced three batters in the ninth and recorded three K's.
  • The Falcons had a season-high 12 walks and left a season-high 16 runners on base.
  • UM scored five runs on five hits while Miles added just one run on six hits.
