Baseball Faces Carson-Newman in Two-Game Slate, Tuesday, Wednesday.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – With a seven-game winning streak, the University of Montevallo baseball team continues a nine-game road stint with a pair of midweek contests against Carson-Newman.

 

The red-hot Falcons will face Carson-Newman on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 1 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 11 a.m. during spring break.

 

Montevallo enters spring break at 20-10 overall and is currently tied for first place in the Gulf South Conference standings are a four-win week. In GSC action, the Falcons swept UAH on the road, in a series that featured two extra-inning games.

 

After going 3-5 to begin the month of March, the Falcons got back on track with seven straight wins, beginning with a sweep of Mississippi College.

 

Seth Gurr, who earned his second win on the mound last week, will start the second game of the series against Carson-Newman. Freshman Zach Wyatt, who was named the GSC Freshman of the Week last week, will earn his first start of the season in game one against the Eagles.

Scouting Montevallo:

 

Montevallo's surge to the top of the GSC standings over the past two weeks can be attributed to its balance at the plate and on the mound.

 

Over the seven-game win streak, Montevallo has scored nearly eight runs per game and allowed just four runs a game.

The Falcons boast a top-five batting average at the plate this season, .304, and a top-three earned run average, 4.91.

 

In the series over UAH, the Falcon pitching staff limited the Charger baserunners by allowing just five walks through the three games – the lowest in a series this season. Over the course of the season, the Montevallo hurlers are second in the league with 241 strikeouts.

Montevallo is 10-6 on the road this year, including seven straight.

Scouting Carson-Newman:
 
The Eagles are 13-14 this year with an 8-7 mark in the SAC. Carson Newman is 10-9 at home this year and welcomes Montevallo with a one-game winning streak. Prior to the win last time out over Catawba, 3-2, the Eagles dropped four straight games.

 

Carson-Newman is batting just .267 on the year and has a 5.67 earned run average.



Series History Against Carson-Newman:

This is the first meeting between the two programs.


 
Player Highlights Montevallo:

Connor Crowson continues to lead Montevallo's offensive attack with a .381 batting average, which ranks 10th in the league.

 

Evan Liddie is tied for the lead in the GSC with 16 hit-by-pitches, and 11 sacrifice bunts. In addition, Liddie is the 16th-toughest batter to strike out in Division II with just five Ks in 104 at-bats.

 

This weekend, Ethan Huddleston took the team lead in homers as he knocked his sixth of the year. He also has a team-leading .655 slugging percentage.

 

Zach Wyatt and Seth Gurr will start the two-game slate against the Eagles. Wyatt is 1-0 on the year with 16 Ks in 14 innings pitched in relief. Gurr has a 2-2 record on the year with 26 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched and a 3.34 ERA.
