Falcons Take On West Alabama in Midweek Match Up

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team is prepared for their non-conference midweek match up with West Alabama on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at Kermit A. Johnson Field in Montevallo, Ala.
 
The Falcons enter the midweek against West Alabama with a 23-18 record and a 14-10 inside the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo is coming off a series win against West Florida where they won the first two games by scores of 4-1 and 10-8. UM dropped the finale 1-8. With the victories, they snap a five-game losing skid and enter the final eight games of the regular season.
 
Michael Morse gets the ball for Montevallo and is 1-0 on the season. The senior from Windermere, Fla. has nine appearances on the season with one start that was against Spring Hill College on Feb. 6. Morse has four scoreless outings this season. Against West Alabama last season, he threw 4.2 innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks while he struck out one batter.

The Falcons are 3-5 so far this season in midweek games with two remaining. With their series win against West Florida, Montevallo is currently in sixth place inside the GSC standings. In their last five games, UM has scored four runs a game. At home the Falcons have the fourth most wins of any team in the GSC with 13.
 
The pitching staff has fired more strikes recently as they have walked four or fewer opposing batters in 12 of their last 15 games. As a team, the Falcons have the fifth-lowest opposing batting average at .285 and they have struck out the second most batters in the conference with 314 punch outs.
 
Scouting West Alabama:
 
The Tigers come in with an 18-21 record overall and a 10-14 record in GSC play this season. West Alabama is currently ninth in the GSC standing and they are one game back of the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament with two GSC series left. They are coming off a defeat by the hands of Columbus State by a score of 2-5 on Tuesday, Apr. 9. In their most recent GSC series, they took a game against the top team in the conference, Lee, 10-3.
 
West Alabama has the lowest team batting average in the GSC at .245. UWA relies on stringing together bases hits as they have hit the lowest amount of home runs in the Gulf South Conference with just 19 on the season.
 
Series History Against West Alabama:
 
Montevallo defeated West Alabama on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 12-0 in Livingston. The Falcons totaled 14 hits in the shutout victory while they struck out seven Tigers in the win. Historically, Montevallo holds a 15-11 edge over UWA. UM is 10-5 at home against the Tigers.
 
Player Highlights Montevallo:
 
Ethan Huddleston and Connor Crowson lead the Falcons with seven homers each while they have combined for 66 RBI. Crowson currently has an on base streak of 11 and leads UM with 12 multi-RBI games this season.
 
Logan Harbin is coming off a great weekend where he had five hits and four RBI against the Argonauts. In his previous six games, Harbin has four games with two or more hits to bring his batting average to .343. He has also hit the most doubles on the team with 10.
 
As a team, the Falcons are batting .296 with the fifth most homers in the GSC with 45 and they have walked the sixth most with 177 free passes.
