MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In game one of the final series of the regular season, the Montevallo baseball team totaled four homers and soared to a 9-3 win over No. 21 AUM.
The Falcons offense exploded in Friday's win with a grand slam from
Logan Harbin, two solo homers from
Ethan Huddleston and a solo home run for
Landon Leake for the most home runs in a single game this season.
With the win, the Falcons moved to 26-20 on the year and into a tie for fifth in the GSC standings with a16-12 conference record.
Montevallo fell behind early when AUM scored on an RBI single in the first, however, a five-run bottom of the first for the Falcons instilled confidence in Falcon starter
Adiel Melendez who tossed scoreless frames over the next six innings.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning,
Logan Harbin took the first pitch he saw out of the park for his eighth homer of the year – a grand slam – that put Montevallo in front 4-1.
Zen Hiatt added UM's fifth run of the frame with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5-1.
Huddleston joined the home-run party with Harbin in the bottom of the third with a solo shot, pushing the lead to 6-1.
In the sixth,
Landon Leake added UM's third homer of the night to make it 7-1.
Melendez returned to the mound in the top of the seventh with 97 pitches thrown already. The lefty worked quickly and needed 10 pitches to sit down the Warhawks in order, ending with a swinging strikeout. The starter went 7.0 innings with seven K's, six hits and just one run allowed.
Huddleston added another insurance run for the Falcons in the seventh with his second homer of the day, another solo shot to left. A sacrifice fly in the eighth off the bat of
Evan Liddie concluded the scoring for the Falcons who led, 9-2.
AUM grabbed a run in the ninth but a 6-4-3 double played, followed by a popup, sealed the win for the Falcons, 9-3.
