Falcons Split Doubleheader, Take Series 2-1 Over AUM on Senior Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  On senior day, the University of Montevallo baseball team split a doubleheader with AUM to win the series, 2-1.
 
Following the senior day celebration, recognizing the 10 members on the 2024 senior, the Falcons dropped game one of the doubleheader 4-3.
 
With the series tied 1-1, Montevallo took the rubber match 4-1 to finish the regular season off with a win and secure the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.
 
GAME 1 INFORMATION

Gino Cozzi was brilliant on the mound to start for the Falcons as held the Warhawks hitless and scoreless through the first five innings.

The scoring began early for the Falcons, much like game one of the series, with two runs in the first inning. Evan Liddie scored the first run of the game on an error and Landon Leake drove in Logan Harbin for the second, on an RBI single.

In the sixth inning, after four straight scoreless innings for both sides, AUM's bats came alive with four runs in the frame. The Warhawks scored the four runs on three hits.

Behind 4-2 in the sixth, Mitchell Walker knocked an RBI double to left field to trim AUM's lead to one, 4-3.

Brandon Moore walked to lead off the ninth inning, but UM was unable to bring in a run, falling 4-3.

GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo collected six hits and scored just three runs. AUM added four runs on six hits.
  • AUM struck out the Falcons 13 times – the second most of the season.
  • Evan Liddie went 3-for-5 from the plate to lead the Falcons.
  • Landon Leake and Mitchell Walker each drove in a run.
  • Gino Cozzi pitched five innings and gave up three runs. All three runs were in the sixth after he tossed five consecutive hitless and scoreless innings to start, with three K's.

Montevallo bounced back in the rubber match, winning 4-1, behind solid pitching and two long balls.

Logan Samuels was electric to start as he went three-up, three-down through the first three frames.

In the second inning, Barry Eiseman plated the first run for the Falcons with an RBI double to left field, giving UM a 1-0 lead.

Logan Harbin knocked his second homer of the weekend in the third, a two-run shot to left to push the lead to 3-1.

In the fourth inning, an RBI single by the Warhawks trimmed UM's lead to 3-1. With the bases loaded, Seth Gurr replaced Samuels on the mound and made quick work of the Falcons. A 4-1-6 double play ended the frame, holding AUM to just one run.

Landon Leake grabbed the run back for Montevallo in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer for his second of the weekend, to lead 4-1.

Chris Foster picked up his seventh save of the season in the seventh innings, holding the 4-1 lead.

UP NEXT:  The Falcons will head to Oxford, Alabama, Friday, May 3, for game one of the conference tournament. Montevallo will be the No. 5 seed and face the No. 4 seed, which will either be Valdosta State or Delta State, at 4 p.m.
