Season-High Four Homers Not Enough in Game One Loss at Shorter

Box Score ROME, Ga. – Montevallo baseball's comeback effort against Shorter fell short, 13-6, on the road, Friday.
 
In game one of the series on Friday afternoon, Montevallo who trailed by as much as nine, 12-3, had its late-game rally fall short to the Hawks, 13-6, despite knocking a season-high four home runs.
 
Jake O'Connell sparked the Montevallo offense early with a triple in the top of the second that led to an RBI single by Landon Leake to even the score, 1-1.
 
In the third, Shorter grabbed the lead back and went ahead of UM 4-1. Once again, O'Connell found himself at the forefront of UM's offense as he launched a solo homer out of the park to make it 4-2. Catcher Christian Kallaher joined O'Connell with a solo home run in the frame to trim the deficit to 4-3.
 
Montevallo fell behind 12-3 as Shorter scored eight runs over the next four frames.
 
To begin the eighth, Leake added his second RBI of the day on his first home run of the year. Third baseman Connor Crowson joined the home run party with a two-run blast to continue the eighth-inning scoring and trim the deficit to 12-6.
 
 The Hawks added a run back in the ninth before three groundouts halted UM's comeback bid, 13-6.
