Falcons Drop Doubleheader to Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Montevallo baseball dropped a doubleheader, Saturday, to Shorter, in Rome, Georgia.

The Falcons dropped game one, 9-2, and narrowly fell in the series finale, 6-5, following a Shorter walk-off. 

GAME  1 INFORMATION

Score: Montevallo 2 |  Shorter 9

Records: Montevallo 21-16 (12-8) | Shorter 20-14 (10-13)

Location: Rome, Georgia

 Shorter took an early 2-0 lead to begin game one of the doubleheader on a homer in the first. Jake O'Connell continued his hot week for the Falcons with a two-run bomb in the second to even the score 2-2. 

UM's offense was stifled the remainder of game one as the Hawks went on to win 9-2.

GAME NOTES

·        Montevallo collected eight hits and scored two runs while Shorter added nine runs on 10 hits.

·        Jake O'Connell finished 3-for-4 from the plate and drove in two runs with a two-run homer.

·        Evan Liddie went 2-for-3 from the plate while Zen Hiat, Mitchell Walker and Luke Mitchell each added a hit.

 

GAME  2 INFORMATION

Score: Montevallo 5 | Shorter 6

Records: Montevallo 21-17 (12-9) Shorter 21-14 (11-13)

Location: Rome, Georgia

 Montevallo's offense opened the series finale with a four-spot in the top of the first inning that began with a Landon Leake RBI single. O'Connell followed with an RBI triple to push the lead to 2-0. A pair of ensuing RBI doubles from Logan Harbin and Connor Crowson pushed UM to a 4-0 advantage.

Montevallo starter Logan Samuels held Shorter off the board in the first two frames but the Hawks added three in the third, trimming UM's lead to one, 4-3.

After the Hawks evened the score 4-4 in the fourth, Zen Hiatt drove in a run on a single to re-take the lead, 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, a two-RBI single gave the Falcons a 6-5 loss.

GAME NOTES

·        Montevallo scored five runs on seven hits while Shorter added six runs on six hits.

·        Jake O'Connell had another good showing at the plate as he added a triple, an RBI and scored two runs.

Montevallo will return to action on Wednesday, April 10, against Miles at Kermit A. Johnson Field and Bob Riesener Stadium
