GAINESVILLE, Ga. – University of Montevallo men's golf's
Harrison Hughston finished tied-seventh at one-under in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional tournament, Saturday.
Hughston shot rounds of 73 and 70 on day one and entered the final round in a tie for ninth at one-under.
In the final round, Hugston turned in a gritty even-par round score of 72, which included four birdies to give himself a chance to qualify for nationals.
To start, Hughston had good looks at birdie in the opening three holes but recorded pars. On the par-five fifth, Hughston found his first birdie of the day to move to one under. In the remaining five holes of the front nine, Hughston totaled two bogeys but saved par on six, eight and nine to shoot one-over. After bogeying the opening hole of the back nine and paring 11 and 12, Hughston drilled a vital 12-foot par putt on 13 to keep himself at one-over for the tournament. Hughston put his foot on the gas over the next three holes with three consecutive birdies. On 15, a chip in from the fairway moved him to one-under. After a birdie on 16 to go to two-under, Hughston bogeyed the tough par-three 17
th to go to one-under. With a par on 18, Hughston went in the clubhouse at one-under for the week and an even-par 72 in round three.
After entering the clubhouse at one-under, Hughston sat tied with four others, potentially, for the second individual qualifying spot.
In the final holes, the individual qualifying number moved from one-under to two-under, eliminating those tied at one-under as a potential national qualifier.
Hughston's, tied-seventh finish is the highest finish at NCAA regionals in Division II program history at Montevallo, passing Connor Godsey's 20th-place mark in 2013.
