MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's soccer opens the season with a 1-0 record after dropping Kentucky Wesleyan, 1-0, in the Falcons' season opener.
The Falcons started the game on the attack with sophomore forward
Lainey Farabaugh taking the game's first shot in the 10
th minute. The shot would be turned aside by the Panthers' goalkeeper. KWC responded with an offensive attack that yielded a pair of shots but both were off target. Farabaugh's attack continued to cause issues for the Panther defense in the 26
th minute with her second shot on goal of the season. The game evolved into a defensive battle with just one shot over the next 18 minutes. Montevallo was first on the board with just seven minutes to go until halftime. The first Falcon goal of 2024 came off the left foot of freshman
Madison Bennett who found the back of the net after
Raylene Alcaraz forced a tough KWC save that careened to an open Bennett. With a final UM corner in the closing stages, Montevallo to a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half mirrored much of the first half with neither side recording a shot until the 60
th minute when Montevallo's
Katelynn Kott sailed over the crossbar. In the 66
th minute, Farabugh tallied another shot on goal that was yet again turned away. Senior midfielder
Bailey Raphelt got in on the attack with her first shot on goal at the 76-minute mark. The Falcons tallied a seventh shot on goal with newcomer
Shadia Valenzuela recording the final shot for the Falcons. In the final ten minutes, the Montevallo defense held strong and gave the Falcons a 1-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan.
