MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team dropped a close contest on Saturday, falling to West Florida 70-67 inside of Central State Bank Arena.
Isabel Grimes led the way 15 points, while shooting an efficient 6-of-8 from the floor (75 percent). Four other Falcons reached double figures including
Aubrey Sorrells (11),
Lia Edwards (10),
Jordan Gillies (10), and
Savannah Cook (10).
Lia Edwards struck first, connecting from long range in the opening minute.
Savannah Cook added another triple two minutes later to put the Falcons up, 6-1, at the 7:05 mark.
Isabel Grimes scored the next five Falcon points as UM held an, 11-5, advantage at the 5:40 mark. The Argos scored the next five points cutting the Falcon lead to one, 11-10, with 4:22 left. Both teams exchanged three-pointers, as
Jerrilyn Richardson scored the fourth three-point basket of the first quarter for UM. Edwards added a free throw and
Aubrey Sorrells cashed in on a lay-in to put the Falcons up, 17-13, at the 2:01 mark. The Argos cashed in on a lay-in and Sorrells closed the quarter with a pair of free throws, as the Falcons held a, 19-15, lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Argos opened the second quarter strong, with an 8-2 run to take a, 23-21, lead at the 7:13 mark.
Elisa Saffold and Cook knocked down triples in the next minute to put the Falcons back up, 27-25, at the 6:07 mark. The Argos scored back-to-back buckets, to take the lead back, 30-27, with 4:11 left. Gillies and Edwards cashed in on lay-ins in the next minute, as UWF led, 32-31, at the 2:41 mark. Both teams scored a free throw each in the final two minutes, as the Argos took a, 33-32, lead at the break.
Sorrells scored the first Falcon bucket of the second half, but the Argos responded, stretching its lead to, 38-34, at the 8:02 mark. Gillies provided a response of her own, draining back-to-back triples to put the Falcons ahead, 40-38, at the 7:06 mark. After an Argo lay-in, Saffold added another triple to put the Falcons up, 43-40, with 4:40 left. UWF drained a triple to tie the game, but Cook knocked down a pair of free throws to put Montevallo ahead, 45-43, with 4:06 left. The Argos outscored the Falcons 9-3 through the remainder of the quarter to take a, 52-48, advantage into the final quarter.
Sorrells opened the fourth quarter with a lay-in and hit a free throw a minute later to cut the deficit to one, 52-51, at the 8:31 mark. The Argos cashed in on an and-one, but a Grimes lay-in and Edwards triple put the Falcons up, 56-55, with 6:02 left. Both teams traded baskets through the next few minutes, as Grimes cashed in on a lay-in to put Montevallo up, 62-61, with 3:39 left. The Argos responded with back-to-back buckets to take a, 66-63, at the 2:44 mark. Grimes scored once again, earning another lay-in, but another Argo response put UWF ahead, 68-65, with 1:57 left. Cook provided the response for the Falcons, cashing in on a lay-in to cut the deficit to one, 68-67, at the 1:28 mark. The Falcons could not find another bucket in the final minute and the Argos knocked a pair of free throws to take the 70-67 win.
