Falcons Take Down Trevecca on the Road, 56-43

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Montevallo women's basketball team secured the season sweep over GSC-newcomer Trevecca Nazarene, defeating the Trojans 56-43 inside of Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.

Aubrey Sorrells led the way with 21 points, while shooting 75 percent from the floor (9-of-12). Sorrells nearly notched a double-double, grabbing nine boards. Jordan Gillies added 12 points and Jerrilyn Richardson scored nine.

The Falcons struggled to find success on offense early on, as Aubrey Sorrells scored the first UM bucket at the 6:50 mark. Elisa Saffold added a jumper a minute later, as the Falcons trailed, 7-5, at the 5:53 mark. After Trevecca extended its lead to, 10-5, Sorrells drained her second triple and added a lay-in to tie the game, 10-10, with 1:24 left. The Trojans responded with a jumper to regain the lead, but Jordan Gillies provided a bucket in the final second to tie the game, 12-12, at the end of the first quarter.

Sorrells continued her hot start knocking down a pair of buckets to open the second quarter, as Montevallo led, 16-15, at the 7:48 mark. Savannah Cook got into the scoring column with an and-one and Sorrells added a jumper to extend the Falcons lead to, 21-15, at the 3:57 mark. The Trojans halted the Falcons run with a triple, but a response from distance by Cook put Montevallo ahead, 24-18, with 2:47 left. Trevecca responded once again with a lay-in, but Gillies added a triple in the final minute, as the Falcons led, 27-20, at the break.

Trevecca opened the second half with an and-one, but back-to-back buckets from Sorrells and Jerrilyn Richardson put the Falcons ahead, 31-23, at the 6:15 mark. Richardson added another bucket, but the Trojans scored the next four points, as UM led, 33-27, at the 4:03 mark. Buckets by Gillies and Sorrells in the next two minutes put Montevallo up, 38-29, with 1:59 left.  Gillies drained a jumper and Richardson added a free throw in the final two minutes, as Montevallo took a, 41-33, advantage into the final quarter.

The Falcons opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back buckets from Richardson and Lia Edwards to extend the lead to double digits, 45-33, at the 9:02 mark. After three Trojan points, a Saffold jumper and a Sorrells and-one extended the lead to, 50-36, at the 7:02 mark. The Trojan defense held Montevallo scoreless through the next four minutes, cutting the UM lead to, 50-40, with 2:24 left. Richardson provided a lay-in for UM, but a Trevecca triple cut the Montevallo lead down to single digits, 52-43, with 2:24 left. The Falcons defense held the Trojans scoreless for the remainder of the game and knocked down four free throws to secure the 56-43 win on the road.
