CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to Lee, 76-53, inside of Paul Dana Walker Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Aubrey Sorrells led the way for Montevallo with 14 points, while
Savannah Cook added 11 and
Elisa Saffold scored ten.
After a Lady Flames bucket in the opening minute, a driving layup by
Jerrilyn Richardson and an
Elisa Saffold triple gave the Falcons an early 5-2 lead at the 7:28 mark. Another Saffold triple, followed by an
Aubrey Sorrells jumper put the Falcons up, 10-7, at the 5:34 mark. Three pointers by
Savannah Cook and Sorrells extended Montevallo's lead to, 16-11, with 3:32 left. The Lady Flames cut the Falcon lead down to one, 18-17, at the 1:15 mark, but the Falcons ended the first quarter with a 6-0 run, highlighted by buckets from Richardson and
Lia Edwards giving the Falcons a, 24-17, advantage after one.
Both teams struggled to find success offensively in the second quarter, with each squad only making one field goal in the first six minutes. Richardson knocked down a triple to put the Falcons up by double digits, 29-19, at the 3:21 mark. The Lady Flames scored the next five points to cut the Falcon lead in half, 29-24, with 51 seconds left. Sorrells knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds to give Montevallo a, 31-24, advantage at the break.
A pair of Lee free throws opened the third quarter, but a pair of triples by Cook put Montevallo back up by double digits, 37-26, at the 8:53 mark. The Lady Flames responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to, 37-34, at the 7:24 mark. Two free throws from Edwards halted the run, but the Lady Flames continued to push, this time using a 14-0 run in the next five minutes to pull ahead, 48-39, with 1:31 left. Sorrells drained a jumper and
Anna Katherine Eastman sunk three free throws in the final minute, but the Lady Flames took a, 56-44, lead into the final quarter.
Lee opened the fourth with a pair of buckets, before Sorrells cashed in on an and-one, as Lee led, 60-47, at the 6:43 mark. Edwards knocked down a pair of free throws and Saffold added a jumper in the next minute, as the Lady Flames held a, 65-51, advantage with 5:12 left. Cook scored the only Falcon basket in the last five minutes, as Lee took home the 76-53, victory.
