MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to Mississippi College, 78-52, inside of Central State Bank Arena on Thursday evening.
Aubrey Sorrells led the way with 17 points, while
Lia Edwards added 11 and
Ramie Reid scored eight.
The Lady Choctaws opened the game with the first five points, before a pair of free throws by
Lia Edwards and an
Aubrey Sorrells lay-in made the score MC, 5-4, at the 7:15 mark. After a Lady Choctaw free throw, Sorrells earned another lay-in to tie the game, 6-6, a minute later. The Lady Choctaws responded with back-to-back buckets, but
Anna Katherine Eastman drained a shot from long range, as MC led, 12-11, with 3:07 left.
Ramie Reid added a jumper a minute later, but the Lady Choctaws extended the advantage to, 18-13, with 37 seconds left. Edwards cashed in on a lay-in at the buzzer, as the Lady Choctaws led, 18-15, at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams traded baskets to open the second quarter, before a Reid lay-in and a
Jerrilyn Richardson free throw tied the game, 20-20, at the 7:42 mark. Sorrells added a jumper, but the Lady Choctaws outscored the Falcons 7-2 to pull ahead, 27-22, at the 5:19 mark. The Lady Choctaws knocked down a pair of free throws, but Sorrells and Richardson scored, cutting the MC advantage to, 29-26, with 3:38 left. The Lady Choctaws outscored the Falcons 6-2 in the final three minutes, taking a, 35-28, lead at the break.
The Lady Choctaws opened the second half with a basket, before Sorrells knocked in a free throw, as MC led, 37-29, at the 8:00 mark. The Lady Choctaws knocked down two more baskets, but Edwards scored the first UM field goal of the second half, as MC held a, 41-31, advantage at the 6:53 mark. MC took control of the game, using a 12-0 run through the next four minutes to take a, 53-31, lead with 2:01 left. Richardson added a jumper in the final two minutes, as the Lady Choctaws held a, 55-33, advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Sorrells and
Savannah Cook scored early baskets in the fourth, as MC held a, 61-40, advantage, at the 7:49 mark.
Carlyn Burdette and
MaKayla Gordon scored points to find their way on the scoreboard, but the Lady Choctaws continued to push in the fourth, ultimately securing a, 78-52, victory.
