MONTEVALLO, Ala. – A pair of
Aubrey Sorrells free throws in the final second lifted the Montevallo women's basketball team to a thrilling, 50-48, win over Delta State in Central State Bank Arena on Saturday.
Savannah Cook led the way for Montevallo with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Cook tied her career-high in three-pointers made, draining four from long range.
Aubrey Sorrells added ten points, while
Anna Katherine Eastman and
Ramie Reid both scored eight.
Delta State got on the board first with a free throw, before
Aubrey Sorrells scored the first field goal of the contest, connecting from distance. The Lady Statesmen scored the next five points, before
Savannah Cook drained a triple to tie the game, 6-6, at the 5:52 mark. Through the next four minutes,
Ramie Reid knocked down five free throws, as the game remained tied, 11-11, with 1:50 left.
Julia Susla added two free throws and Cook drained another from long range, as Montevallo led, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter.
Cook opened the second quarter how she finished the first, draining her third triple to force an early DSU timeout at 9:50. The Lady Statesmen scored a lay-in, but Cook connected from distance once again to put the Falcons up, 22-13, at the 8:40 mark. The Lady Statesmen responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to, 22-20, at the 7:00 mark. Sorrells scored a lay-in to halt the run, but back-to-back buckets from Delta State tied the game, 24-24, at the 5:56 mark. The Falcons scored the next five points, highlighted by a
Jerrilyn Richardson to take a, 29-24, lead with 3:46 left. Buckets from Reid and Eastman put the Falcons ahead, 34-28, at the 1:53 mark. The Lady Statesmen added one more basket in the final seconds, as Montevallo held a, 34-30, at the break.
Delta State opened the scoring in the second half, before back-to-back buckets from Sorrells and Cook put the Falcons ahead, 39-32, at the 7:25 mark. The Falcons struggled offensively, failing to score through the next six minutes, holding on to a tight, 39-36, advantage with two minutes left in the quarter. Richardson ended the scoring drought, draining a jumper at the 1:25 mark to put the Falcons ahead, 41-36. The Lady Statesmen added a three-pointer in the final minute, as Montevallo held a, 41-39, advantage at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Statesmen opened the fourth quarter with a basket in the opening minute to tie the game at 41. The Falcons found its first points from the free throw line, as
Lia Edwards connected on a pair to put Montevallo back up, 43-41, at the 7:10 mark. The Lady Statesmen responded with a jumper, but Eastman scored back-to-back buckets, with one coming from long distance, to put Montevallo up, 48-43, with 4:56 left. The Lady Statesmen responded with a lay-in cutting the UM lead to, 48-45, at the 4:15 mark. Both teams struggled to find scoring in the next three minutes until a Delta State free cut the deficit to, 48-46, with 1:01 left in the game. Delta State followed that up with a crucial steal and score to tie the game, 48-48, with 30 seconds left. Montevallo used up most of the game clock on its next possession, before calling a timeout with three seconds left. Out of the timeout, Sorrells fired a deep triple, but was fouled on the shot with one second left. The freshman knocked down a pair and the UM defense held strong on the other end to secure the, 50-48, victory.
