HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team dropped a close contest on the road, falling in overtime to Alabama Huntsville, 67-61, at Spraggins Hall.
Four Falcons reached double figures including
Jordan Gillies (17),
Lia Edwards (16),
Aubrey Sorrells (14), and
Isabel Grimes (10). Sorrells grabbed ten boards to secure her second double-double of the season.
The Falcons fired first as
Lia Edwards scored on a lay-in at 8:31. After a UAH bucket,
Aubrey Sorrells cashed in on an and-one to put the Falcons ahead 5-2 at the 5:57 mark. The Chargers scored the next four points to take a brief lead, but Sorrells responded with four of her own to put the Falcons back on top, 10-6, with 2:31 left. Both teams traded a pair of baskets to end the quarter, which included a tip-in by Sorrells who reached double figures in the first ten minutes. The Falcons held a, 14-10, lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Chargers opened the second quarter with the first five points to take a, 17-14, advantage at the 8:03 mark.
Jordan Gillies scored the first points for UM in the second, draining a triple to knot the game at 17 at the 7:40 mark. The game stayed deadlocked at 21 a minute later, but back-to-back baskets from Edwards and Grimes put the Falcons up, 25-21, at the 5:24 mark. UAH responded with a pair of baskets of its own to tie the game back up at 25 with 4:09 left. Both teams scored a basket each to end the quarter, as Gillies cashed in on a triple. Montevallo took a, 28-27, lead at the break.
The Chargers opened the second half, on a 6-0 run to take an early, 33-28, lead at the 6:47 mark. Edwards scored the first basket for UM in third, cashing in on a lay-in a minute later. Sorrells added a jumper two minutes later, but the Chargers held a, 37-32, advantage with 3:41 left. Montevallo began to find its footing late in the third quarter, using an 8-1 run capped by an Edwards and-one to regain the lead, 40-38, at the 2:33 mark.
Elisa Saffold connected on a lay-in, but the Chargers outscored the Falcons 7-2 in the final minutes to hold a, 45-42, lead at the end of the third quarter.
Saffold opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a jumper, but four straight Charger points put UAH ahead by five, 49-44, at the 7:21 mark. Edwards and Grimes combined to score the next five points and tie the game at 49 with 4:14 left. Both teams traded baskets, as a Sorrells jumper tied the game at 51 with 2:57 left. After a UAH basket, Grimes connected on a crucial and-one to put Montevallo ahead, 54-53, with 2:16 left. Neither team found the basket in the next few minutes as the Chargers looked to score in its final possession with 29 seconds. UAH missed a layup, but an offensive rebound and a foul put the Chargers at the line. UAH connected on one of two free throws to send the game to overtime.
UAH opened the overtime period with a pair of free throws, but a Gillies triple put the Falcons ahead, 57-56, at the 3:30 mark. A UAH free throw at 3:14 tied the game at 57 for the next minute and a half, until the Chargers cashed in on an and-one to take a 60-57 lead with 1:36 left. The Chargers began to pull away knocking down multiple free throws to take a, 65-58, lead with nine seconds left. Gillies scored a three-pointer in the final seconds, but the Falcons ultimately fell, 67-61, in overtime.
