MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned a solid preseason win on Friday, taking down Huntingdon College 77-53 on UM's third annual Education Day.
Julia Susla led the way in scoring with ten points, while
Emily Mouser notched seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Mouser scored the first basket of the day at 9:09, giving the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage.
Jerrilyn Richardson and
Kylee Norman scored in the next few minutes, but the Hawks jumped ahead, 9-7, at the 3:38 mark. The Falcons responded with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of triples from Richardson to take a 15-9 lead with 1:12 left in the first period. The Hawks scored the last four points, as the Falcons led, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter.
The Falcons came out firing in the second quarter, opening the period with a 10-0 run, capped by six points from Caryln Burdette. After a Huntingdon triple halted the Falcon run, Burdette responded with her second consecutive three-pointer to put the Falcons ahead, 28-16, at the 5:55 mark. The Falcons continued to extend the lead, as
Sidney Jones hit a pair of buckets and Mouser hit a three-pointer to put the Falcons ahead, 35-19, with 2:35 left in the half. Both teams exchanged points in the final minutes, as the Falcons took a, 41-23, advantage at the break.
Montevallo opened the second half with a 7-0 run capped by an
Audrey Hendrix three-pointer to extend the lead to 48-23. Huntingdon continued to fight, outscoring the Falcons 9-4 through the next few minutes to cut the Falcon advantage to, 52-32, with 3:48 left. Montevallo closed the third quarter strong, as
Alani Owens scored five of the final eight UM points to stretch the lead to, 60-36, going into the final quarter.
Lia Edwards and
Elyse Hughes added points early in the fourth, before a
Julia Susla jumper would put Montevallo ahead, 69-42, at the final media timeout.
Mary Cartee scored a pair of buckets down the stretch and
Shalexia Little added layup in the final minute, as Montevallo ultimately took home a, 77-53, victory in the exhibition contest.
