Montevallo Picks Up Road Win Over Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga— The Montevallo volleyball team picked up a gritty road win, taking down Valdosta State 3-1 at The Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Valdosta State jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set, but the Falcons battled back, eventually evening the score at 11 following a service ace from Lily Erdal and a block from Danielle Greene and Nikol Antova. The two sides traded points down the stretch, with 13 ties in total, before Montevallo closed it out behind a kill from Eliza Tyrrell and an ace from Ellise Hanson to win 28-26.

Set Two remained tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points until late. With the Blazers ahead 18-17, Valdosta State used a late surge to take the set 25-19 and even the match.

In the third, Montevallo built an early 8-4 advantage before VSU battled back to even things at 10. The set stayed close until the final stretch, when key swings from Tyrrell and Maggie McColley pushed UM ahead. A service error and a McColley kill sealed the set 25-21 in favor of the Falcons.

The Blazers came out strong in the fourth, taking a 14-7 lead as they looked to extend the match. Montevallo responded with several runs of its own and, after trailing 18-12, rattled off six of the next seven points to pull within one. The Falcons closed on another strong stretch, scoring seven of the final nine points to win 25-22 and secure the 3-1 victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Maggie McColley and Nikol Antova led the way with 13 kills apiece.
  • McColley added 10 digs to record her first career double-double.
  • Ava Wind tied her season high with 29 digs.

UP NEXT: UM returns home to Central State Bank Arena on Tuesday night against West Alabama. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
