Falcons Top No. 16 West Florida for First Time Since 2003

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For the first time since Nov. 2, 2003, Montevallo Volleyball took down No. 16 West Florida, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the second set for a 1-1 tie, the Falcon took the final two sets to snap a 30-game losing streak against the Argos.

Montevallo opened the afternoon with a quick 4-1 run to take control early before a trio of kills from Maggie McColley, Katie Wilkerson, and Nikol Antova stretched Montevallo's led to 10-4. The Argos battled back to cut the UM lead down to three at 17-14. With the Falcons' leading 22-20, the Falcons took the final three points of the opening set, capped by a kill from Mae Mae Beatty, to take a one-set lead.

In a near mirror image to the first, Montevallo jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. With Montevallo leading by five midway through the set, West Florida would rattle off six-straight points to gain control at 13-12. Ellise Hanson, Danielle Greene and Eliza Tyrrell would look to spark a Montevallo comeback late in the second with three-straight kills to cut the lead down to 22-20 but UWF would take three of the final four points of the set to knot the game at 1-1 overall.

The Falcons again took a 4-1 lead to start the third set before another kill from Greene lifted UM to a 7-3 lead. An ace from Delaney Sisson and an error from the Argos would stretch UM's advantage to 9-3. Later in the set, Montevallo went on a four-point run to open up an 18-9 lead after taking advantage of UWF errors. Kills from Wilkerson and Tyrell extended Montevallo's lead to 10 points at 21-11. UWF would look to spark a comeback with back-to-back scores, but the Falcons would get to set point with kills from Greene and McColley and an ace from Tyrrell. The Falcons would win the third set off an error from UWF.

With a 2-1 lead in sets, Montevallo looked to close the game quickly with another quick lead out of the gate, but UWF would tie the game at 4-4 in the final set with three-consecutive points. West Florida would then take four points in a row to open an 8-5 lead over UM. The Falcons battled back with a four-point run to take a 9-8 lead with yet another kill from Greene. Montevallo would go on to win six of the next eight points to go up 15-11 late in the fourth. UWF sliced into UM's lead to make it a 17-16 game but a kill from McColley put the Falcons up 19-16. UWF tied the game at 20-20 with three straight points but gave up two with a pair of errors that left UM leading 22-20. Kills from Wilkerson and Tyrrell left Montevallo match-point with a 24-22 lead. A UWF error ended the Argos comeback hopes and gave Montevallo its first win over West Florida in 23 years.
