Falcons Fall to Last-Second Shot at Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – Montevallo men's basketball fell on the road to Georgia Southwestern, 74-73, after late bucket from Hurricanes.
 
Georgia Southwestern jumped out to a an early five-point lead in the first four minutes before the Falcons cut the lead down to 7-5 with a Brandon Fussell and-one at the 15:10 mark. A Hurricane triple with just over 11 minutes left in the first half stretched the GSW lead out to 16-9. GSW saw its largest lead of the half at 19-10 with an and-one of its own at the 9:01 mark. Montevallo battled back to tie the game at 24-24 with a 12-5 run over the next five minutes with four points from freshman guard Bryant James and a triple from Fussell to cap the run. Montevallo used the Fussell triple and buckets from Sam Duskin and another from Fussell to put the Falcons out in front with a 28-24 lead with just over three minutes left in the half. James scored his eighth point of the first half to give Montevallo a three-point lead before the Hurricanes beat the buzzer with a shot from long range to send the game to the half in a 33-33 tie.
 
GSW came out of the half firing on a 9-0 run in the first three and a half minutes to take a 42-33 lead at the 16:44 mark. Derek Moore ended the run with a pair of free throws before a pair of GSW buckets stretched the lead out to 10 with 14:54 to go. Reese Gurner score back-to-back UM buckets to cut into the lead but a pair of GSW triples stretched the lead back to 52-42 with 11:49 to play. A pair of James three-pointers capped a 10-2 Montevallo run that tied the game at 54 with just over eight minutes left to go. The two sides traded buckets for the next four minutes before a GSW three left UM in a five-point hole with 4:13 on the clock. In crunch time, Moore knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Falcons up 73-72 with just 25 seconds left. The Hurricanes then beat the buzzer on its final possession to take a 74-73 win over Montevallo.
