BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team closed the preseason on Monday, falling to Samford, 77-53, at the Pete Hanna Center.

Emily Mouser and Audrey Hendrix led the way for the Falcons, scoring 12 points apiece.

Samford opened the game with a pair of baskets, before back-to-back three pointers from Mouser and Hendrix, put the Falcons ahead, 6-4, at the 8:24 mark. The Bulldogs began to catch fire from deep, draining three triples in the next few minutes, to pull ahead, 13-9, at 5:08. Elyse Hughes and Lia Edwards connected on free throws, but Samford outscored Montevallo 11-3 throughout the rest of the quarter to take a, 24-12, lead at the end of the first frame.

Hendrix opened the second quarter with her second made three-pointer to cut the deficit back to single digits, 24-15. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of baskets, before Alani Owens cashed in on a lay-in, as Samford held a, 29-17, advantage at the 5:04 mark. Owens added another jumper a few minutes later, but Samford stretched its lead out to 15 points, 35-20, with 1:36 left. Mouser closed the half with a pair of baskets, as Samford took a, 36-24, lead into the break.

Hendrix opened the third quarter just how she started the second, draining a three-pointer to cut the deficit back to single digits, 36-27. Lia Edwards added a lay-in a few minutes later and Hendrix cashed in on her fourth triple of the day, as Montevallo trailed, 43-32, at the 5:49 mark. The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run highlighted by back-to-back threes to take a, 51-32, lead with 3:15 left in the third quarter. The Falcons responded with an 8-0 run highlighted by five points from Mouser to cut the deficit to, 51-39, at 1:15. A Samford steal and score gave the Bulldogs a, 53-39, lead heading into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, to extend the SU lead to, 60-39, at 7:46. Montevallo responded with a 6-0 run, as Carlynn Burdette drained a three-pointer and Shalexia Little cashed in on three free-throws, as SU held a, 60-45, advantage at the 5:14 mark. The Bulldogs pulled away in the latter half of the fourth quarter, outscoring the Falcons 15-8 for the remainder of the contest to seal a 75-53 victory.
