MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball improves to 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference schedule and 5-3 overall after topping Delta State, 63-60, on Thursday night.
The first seven minutes of the game saw both sides struggle to find the bottom of the net with just six points scored by each team at the 13:30 mark. Montevallo used a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 12-6 lead after a finish at the rim from junior guard
Tyson Sexton with 10:27 left in the half. A 7-0 Delta State run left Montevallo trailing by a score of 13-12 with 8:02 before the break. A
Reese Gurner triple gave Montevallo control, but DSU would respond with an 8-2 run to take a 21-19 lead with just 4:26 to go. Delta State would hold a slim 27-23 lead heading into the locker room.
Sexton opened the second half scoring with a three on the break before
Bryant James nailed one from deep to knot the game at 29-29. Freshman
Devon McKinnon added a third triple from Montevallo to give the Falcons a three-point lead on the next possession. Sexton converted the old school three-point play with 11:48 to go to cap a 14-0 Montevallo run and give Montevallo a 41-29 lead, it's largest of the night. With 7:18 to play, Delta State cut Montevallo's lead down to four before cutting the lead down to one with just 4:17 to play. Sexton knocked down a crucial three ball from the corner to give Montevallo a 61-55 lead with just 1:17 to play. With 17 seconds to go, Delta State pulled within one but a pair of clutch free-throws from
Brandon Fussell and a defensive stop from the Falcons in the final seconds secured Montevallo's 63-60 win at home.

- Montevallo bounced back from a poor shooting performance in the first half to shoot 48.2-percent in the final 20 minutes while adding a 46.2-percent mark from long range in the second half.
- The Falcons won the battle inside with a 22-12 lead in points in the paint while capitalizing on 13 DSU turnovers for a total of 19 points.
- Montevallo got out on the break to score 17 fast-break points while holding the Statesmen to just five.
- Tyson Sexton led Montevallo's scoring with a total of 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 3-of-5 from deep while adding four rebounds and two assists.
- Devon McKinnon ranked second on the team with 13 points while adding four rebounds.
- Derek Moore tallied his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes on the floor.
