Falcons Slip to 13-8 After 90-85 Loss to Delta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball slips to 13-8 overall and 9-6 in Gulf South Conference action after dropping a meeting with Delta State, 90-85, on Saturday evening.
 
The two sides started the game hot with just one missed field goal in the opening three minutes before Delta State took a 10-7 lead with 15:43 left in the first. Camden Andrews tied the game after converting the old-fashioned three-point play before the Statesmen used an 10-3 run to go up 20-13 with 12:49 on the clock. Montevallo's Brandon Fussell ended the run with his first bucket of the night before Derek Moore cut the lead down to one possession at the 11:57 mark. With 10:12 on the clock, Tyson Sexton nailed a three from the corner to knot the game at 22-22. Just three minutes later, Sexton tied the game again with a finish at the rim with the score at 28-28. A 9-2 DSU run left Montevallo in a 37-30 hole with 4:11 on the clock before Luke Smith ended the run with his second three of the night. Montevallo trailed by nine with just under two minutes to play but was able to work it down to 45-40 at the half.
 
Out of the break, Delta State kept the Falcons at arm's length in the first three minutes before a quick 4-0 spurt cut the lead down to 49-48 at the 17:11 mark. With 16:02 on the clock, another Sexton triple gave Montevallo a 53-53 lead, its first since the 17:48 mark of the first half. A Curry three pushed the junior over double digits and tied the game at 56-56 before a 9-1 Delta State run stretched the lead to 65-57 with 10:57 to play. Montevallo battled to cut the lead back down to two points with a second chance bucket from Moore at the 8:06 mark. Curry's second three-point of the night came at the 4:06 mark to make the score 80-78 heading into the final minutes. The Falcons were able to keep the game close down the stretch but a costly turnover in the final minute gave Delta State a 90-85 win over the Falcons.

  • Montevallo won the rebounding battle, 31-19, with the Falcons taking an 11-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • The Falcons committed 19 turnovers that the Statesmen turned into 21 points while UM scored just six points on six DSU giveaways.
  • Jaylen Curry led Montevallo with 21 points on 8-10 shooting while adding nine rebounds.
  • Derek Moore finished with 19 points and nine rebounds while Camden Andrews tallied 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
