Falcons Hold On For 63-60 Road Win Over Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Montevallo men's basketball held on for a 63-60 win over Union on the road to improve to 10-6 in conference play with just six games left in the season.
 
Union opened the game on a 6-2 run in the first two minute but back-to-back threes from Jaylen Curry and Brandon Fussell capped an 8-0 Falcon run that gave Montevallo 10-6 lead at the 16:00 mark. The Bulldogs pulled back within one before Fussell eclipsed double figures with his 11th point of the game coming with 11:37 left in the first half. Out of the under eight media timeout, Curry scored five-straight points for the Falcons to give Montevallo a 21-16 lead with 7:53 left. Just a minute later, Fussell nailed three free throws in a single trip to the line to extend the lead to eight. With 2:19 left in the half, Union cut Montevallo's lead down to four before Camden Andrews answered with a creative finish at the rim to push the lead to 30-24. In the final minute of the first half, Derek Moore scored back-to-back buckets to give Montevallo a 36-27 lead heading into the break.
 
Montevallo shot 43 percent from the floor in the first half with 11 points off turnovers while Fussell scored 16 first-half points with eight points each from Curry and Andrews.
 
Montevallo opened up its largest lead of the game at 38-27 before Union went on a 12-0 run to take a 39-38 lead after the first four minutes of the second half. Curry ended the run with a trip to the line before Moore regained Montevallo's lead with a finish in the paint. Andrews surpassed double digits with a fadeaway jumper at the 12:48 mark before giving Montevallo a 49-48 lead with 9:24 left. Fussell's first points of the second half came at the 6:50 mark with a putback before Tyson Sexton's first points of the game gave Montevallo a 56-51 lead with 4:25 to play. With just two minutes to go, Curry made four consecutive free throws to give the Falcons a 60-55 lead. Union cut the lead down to just two points with 33 seconds on the clock before a pair of free throws left the score at 61-60 with just 18 seconds on the clock. Fussell knocked down a pair of free throws in the final second to give Montevallo a 63-60 over the Bulldogs.

  • Montevallo struggled to shoot the ball from the floor with just a 35.2-percent shooting clip but held Union to 37.5 percent from the field.

  • Montevallo lost the rebounding battle 39-35 with Union taking 13 offensive boards to UM's 11.
  • Brandon Fussell led the Falcons in scoring with 20 points on 6-of-16 shooting while going 7-for-8 at the strip and adding five rebounds.
  • Jaylen Curry finished with a perfect 7-for-7 mark at the line with 17 points while Camden Andrews scored 15 points on 7-of-10 from the line with four rebounds and two assists.
