Falcons Open Up GSC Play Against West Florida

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team opens up Gulf South Conference action as they travel to Pensacola, Fla. for a three-game set against West Florida on Friday, Feb .14 through Saturday, Feb. 15.
 
Last Time Out
Montevallo is coming off a series where they took on the reigning National Champions, Tampa. The Falcons won the first game behind Adiel Melendez who went 6.1 innings, struck out five batters and only allowed two hits and one earned run. The Falcons would fall in the final two games of the series as they lost an exciting 7-6 game in game two and, finally, 15-4 in the finale.

About Montevallo
Adiel Melendez was electric against No. 1 Tampa as he had the Spartans no-hit through four innings. For this outing he earned GSC Pitcher of the Week as well as NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week. With the win, Melendez moves to 2-0 on the year while snapping No. 1 Tampa's nine game win streak, dating back to 2024. He leads the GSC with two wins, is tied for third with 11 innings pitched and currently has the lowest batting average against in the conference at .143.
 
Connor Crowson has been scorching hot to start the 2025 season. Crowson leads the Gulf South Conference with 4 homers and 13 hits. Against No. 1 Tampa he totaled 8 hits, 2 doubles, 2 homers, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. The Okotoks, Canada native leads the conference with 28 total bases. Like Crowson, McGwire Turner has opened the season with a seven-game hitting streak. Against No. 1 Tampa, Turner blasted his first and second home runs of the season. He scored a run in every game against the Spartans and had four hits in the series. Crowson and Turner are first and second on the team in batting average, hits and on base percentage.
 
As a team, Montevallo leads the conference with 16 total home runs. In a tie for second place with seven is Lee, Trevecca Nazarene and West Alabama. In the series, the Falcons will throw Adiel Melendez in game one, Seth Gurr will take the ball in game two and Gino Cozzi will pitch in the finale for Montevallo.
 
Scouting West Florida
The Argonauts roll into conference play with a 3-3 record. In the first series of the season, UWF lost a three-game series to Florida Southern. They bounced back and took two out of three games from Rollins the weekend after. West Florida won the GSC Conference Tournament a year ago.
 
Cade Easterbrook has led the offensive charge as he's batting .429 so far in 21 at bats. Easterbrook has three multi-hit games this season and had five hits against Rollins. In the series against the Tars, he scored four runs, knocked in three RBI and homered once. Brett Rowell has two homers and has driven in the most RBI for the Argonauts with five.
 
Dalton Neuschwander will take the ball for the Argonauts in game one and will come in with a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Neuschwander was dealing against Rollins as he went five innings and gave up no runs while striking out three. As a staff, they have struck out the least amount of batters out of any team in the GSC with 43 strikeouts.
