MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's lacrosse suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Saint Leo in a 14-13 battle on the bricks.
Saint Leo jumped out to an early lead with a pair of goals in the opening three minutes before
John Spaans' first goal of the day brought the Falcons back within one at the 10:53 mark. The Falcons held the Lions scoreless over the next three minute before SLU took a 3-1 lead at the 7:50 mark. With 5:33 on the clock,
Aidan Collery sparked a 3-0 Montevallo run that featured goals from
Marley Straker and Aaron Tichinoff that lifted the Falcons to a 4-3 lead with 3:44 left. The Lions would tie the game at 4-4 before
Alex Egorshin made a pair of saves to send the game to the second locked in a tie.
The Falcons regained control with an early second-quarter goal from
Brandon Shaffner before the Lions scored two unanswered to take the lead with 11:55 left in the half. Egorshin tallied another save before SLU extended its lead to 7-5 with 5:37 to go. With 2:48 on the clock,
Matthew Boas cut the lead in half with an assist from Spaans before Spaans tied the game at seven apiece with just 25 second left in the half.
Out of the break, Montevallo struck first with a
Jacob Obee goal just 85 seconds into the half before
Michael Howkins scored a man-down goal to give the Falcons a 9-7 lead. Saint Leo responded with a goal of its own before
Jetty Miller took advantage of man-up chance to stretch Montevallo's lead back to two. With 6:13 on the clock, Collery gave UM its largest lead of the day with an 11-8 advantage after the freshman's second goal of the day. Saint Leo added two goals in the final three minutes to head into the fourth with Montevallo leading 11-10.
Saint Leo tied the game at 11 with a man-up goal early in the fourth before the Falcons took the lead with a Miller goal at the 12:22 mark. The Lions tied the game just two minutes later before Egorshin recorded a pair of saves to keep the game locked at 12-12 with 6:04 to go. With just 4:18 left, Boas lifted the Falcons to a 13-12 lead with an unassisted effort. Saint Leo allied a pair of goals in the final two minutes to take a 14-13 win over Montevallo.
