MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After falling behind, 3-1, the Montevallo men's tennis team rallied in the final three singles matches to earn a 4-3 win over West Alabama. The Falcons victory marks the first over the Tigers in program history.
West Alabama opened the day taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the early 1-0 advantage.
Dylan Kamel and
Luiz Brandao earned the lone doubles victory for the Falcons, earning a 6-4 win at the #1 spot.
Ryota Nakajima earned the first point of the day for UM, defeating Sebastiao Vilas 6-1, 6-2 at the #5 spot.
The Tigers picked up a pair of wins at #2 and #6 singles to pull ahead 3-1.
The Falcons continued to fight, as Gracioli Guilherme picked up a crucial three set victory, defeating Federico Iturbe 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at the #4 spot to cut the deficit to, 3-2.
Leonidas Lazarides provided the equalizer, earning a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory at #3 singles to tie the match, 3-3.
It would all come down to the #1 spot which featured UM's
Paul Sobich and UWA's Eita Ishiwaka. After dropping the first set 7-5, Sobich responded with a dominant 6-2 win in set number two. Sobich ultimately came up victorious in a tightly contested third set, 7-6, to secure the win at the #5 spot and the overall victory for the Falcons.
Montevallo returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, as the Falcons travel to Montgomery to face Alabama State.
