MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 25 ranked University of Montevallo baseball team is set for their home Gulf South Conference opener as they take on the Mississippi College Choctaws on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22. The teams will play a single game on Friday starting at 2:00 p.m. CT and a double header on Saturday with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. CT at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
Last Time Out
The Falcons are coming off their third consecutive win as they defeated Tuskegee on Tuesday, Feb. 18 by a score of 3-1. The pitching staff was as strong as ever as they recorded 14 strikeouts and surrendered four hits and one unearned run.
Connor Crowson hit two long balls to bring his GSC leading total to six while
McGwire Turner hit his first double of the season to bring in the Falcons third RBI of the game.

About Montevallo
Montevallo is coming into this weekend's match up as the No. 25 ranked team according to the American Baseball Coaches Association. The pitching staff has been tremendous so far in 2025. They have the lowest opposing batting average in the GSC at .253. UM is second behind Delta State with a staff ERA of 3.88. They are third in the conference with only 61 runs allowed. Montevallo has struck out the second most batters in the league with 93 punch outs.
Gino Cozzi turned in his best outing so far of 2025 as he carved up the Argonaut lineup including seven strikeouts. Cozzi went 6 innings as he scattered three hits and only walked one. After a 22-inning doubleheader on Friday, he provided multiple low stress innings including three 1-2- 3 innings. In two starts so far this season,
Seth Gurr has 8.1 innings, nine strikeouts and has only allowed three earned runs and one walk. He made his first weekend start of the year against West Florida and was lights out. He had a 1-2-3 inning in the second and had his most dominant inning of the season in the fourth where he recorded all three outs via strikeout.
With a two-homer game against Tuskegee,
Connor Crowson is now tied for fourth in Division II with six home runs so far in 11 games. He's tied for the GSC lead with 17 hits, has the second highest slugging percentage at .826 and the fourth highest OPS at 1.249. As a team, Montevallo has a GSC-leading 19 home runs. The Falcons are fifth In NCAA Division II in homers.
Scouting Mississippi College
The Choctaws come in with a 6-4 record on the season and 2-1 record in GSC play. MC was ranked in this week's NCBWA South Region rankings as they came in at ninth. Last week, they defeated West Alabama in their GSC series. After losing the first game 4-2, they bounced back to win the series with victories of 3-1 and 15-3.
Senior JT Vance continues his pursuit of Choctaw records. The Union, Miss., native sits in the top 10 in Mississippi College program history in home runs (tied for 5
th with 25), slugging percentage (8
th at .644), and triples (tied for 9
th with five). Vance was named to the Preseason All-GSC team along with team Korey Cooper. Cooper currently leads the team with a .400 batting average in 35 at bats, 14 hits, a .657 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.082.
The Choctaws pitching staff comes in with a top three ERA in the conference at 4.56. They have the third most strikeouts with 88 and the second lowest amount of earned runs given up at 41. Holland Townes leads the GSC with 19.1 innings pitched and is second with 22 strikeouts. Townes has two consecutive games with eight or more strikeouts.
The Falcons have won eight games a row against the Choctaws. Montevallo swept Mississippi College in their GSC series last season as the Falcons combined for 26 runs. UM scored 8 or more runs in each game.
